I dont live in the US so cant get sonata here yet. For insomnia my choice is Stillnox 10mg which I believe is Ambien and Zopimed 7.5 grams (Zopiclone). Ive tried zopimed in the past and it leaves an awful taste in the mouth all day. It also didnt seem to help if I woke early - I rarely went back off. However, Im a bit reluctant to try ambien because Ive heard of bad side effects. I dont have the option of a lower dosage 10mg is all they have. What do other think?

5-10mg of zolpidem shouldn't have "bad side effects," although is you are very small or otherwise especially sensitive and don't go to sleep right away after taking it, there is chance you may experience amnesia and a much rarer chance (extremely unlikely at these doses) you will experience some degree of visual hallucination.
As popular as it is to do so, you really can't compare zopiclone to zolpidem. Zopiclone is a much more effective sedative-hypnotic. I suffer from a serious sleeping disorder, and sleeping pills in general are useless for me. However, if I am in the right frame of mind and have been awake long enough to be ready to sleep, 15mg ofzopiclone may work. 20mg of zolpidem would never put me to sleep.
It is a shame that you don't yet have access to zaleplon (Sonata), since it is specifically designed for people who wake up during the night and have difficultly going back to sleep. Zolpidem is useful mainly for those who have trouble falling asleep, its effects wear off after a few hours.
You can try zolpidem, but it's not designed for the problem you describe. Your best bet is to keep using zopiclone, adding 1/2-1 extra pill to help you sleep through the night. As for the taste, some people have found that having a snack before bedtime, then taking the zopiclone, helps eliminate the bad taste. Don't take it on an empty stomach.
Oh, and maybe this thread should move to the "Meds" forum;)

I too was living in the Uk and was put on Zopiclone for insomnia. for me it:
1. didn't work, still wide awake 3 hours later, but TERRIBLE hang-over feeling next day after I finally got to sleep from exhaustion
2. Yes horrid metallic taste in mouth - it's a known and documented side effect
3. after 1 week of being on it I had double vision for the next 2 weeks even after I stopped taking it.
I prefer whole-heartedly Temazepam (Restoril in USA) although you will be lucky to get a doc to prescribe it for more than 10 days, and IF you can find it online (I can't) it WILL BE VERY expensive. Temazepam knocks me out after about 1/2 hour and no hangover feelings as long as you are in bed for like 8 hours.
