Nerve Test
      #130628 - 01/21/04 06:17 PM

I finally had my ortho consult after waiting two months. Things went very well as he actually listened and seemed to care. I was being seen for an old elbow dislocation and fracture..11years old... and its never really healed. He was very impressed I brought with me the hospital records of injury and notes I had taken about it. While it was obvious I had had a fracture and do have arthritis in the joint, it seems my main issue is my ulnar nerve. It slides across my elbow when I move my arm which apparently isnt normal. Instead of resecting the radial head at this point he wants to do the nerve test and then surgically move the ulnar nerve so its will no longer rub across the elbow. He really feels that by doing this I will feel so much better I might not want the radial head taken out. I tend to agree with him. I am concerned about the nerve test as I had something similar done to my back after an auto accident 15 years ago..it hurt like heck! But I know I need to do this. He also looked at my carpal tunnel but seeing as that is going to be a workers comp I shouldn't have the test done before I file the claim. I will have to go back and have another nerve test done on the other arm~
I did a search for nerve tests and came up with a few posts but just curious if anyone else has had this particular one done.

THE NERVE TEST IS THE WORST THING THAT I HAVE HAD TO GO THROUGH REGARDING MY PAIN; THEY TAKE THE PART OF YOUR BODY THAT IS EXCRUCIATINGLY PAINFUL AND THEN SHOCK THE DEVIL OUT OF IT. I HAVE HAD 4 OF THOSE THINGS AND I DON'T PLAN TO HAVE ANOTHER ONE. YOU WOULD THINK THAT WITH THE AMOUNT OF RESEARCH AND PATIENTS WITH NERVE PROBLEMS, I MIGHT ADD, THEY WOULD COME UP WITH ANOTHER SOLUTION BESIDES THIS THING. I AM NOT TRYING TO SCARE YOU, THE ONLY THING YOU CAN DO IS JUST GET IT OVER WITH, BUT I JUST DON'T HAVE ANYTHING GOOD TO SAY ABOUT IT. HOWEVER, IF YOU HAVE GONE THIS FAR, JUST GRIN AND BEAR IT; AND IT WILL BE OVER WITH. I DO FEEL YOUR PAIN AS FAR AS THIS GOES.

I've also had the electrical nerve tests (bilateral ulnar neuropathy). In my case, they were performed in a neurologist's office. I did get diagnosed with the neuropathies and a huge prescription for 800MG naprosyn (along with a note informing grad school that I was "disabled" and therefore should be permitted to take exams on a computer rather than by handwriting). However the doctor didn't even mention surgery. He just said I'd have to be on meds for the foreseeable future (have since developed allergic reactions to all NSAIDS....) I did experience discomfort during the tests though - it's kind of like someone hitting your "funny bone" over and over again with a cattle prod. I say discomfort because it wasn't bad enough to make me nauseous or woozy or anything. Just very unpleasant. The good thing (at least for me) is that it was over rather quickly and it furnished a solid diagnosis. Hope this is helpful.

I have had this done numerous times. Had this test done 25 yrs ago. For those that think it is bad now, you should have had one then. It was quite painful.
The test is "uncomfortable" I must admit. I have had two on my arm, one on my hip and leg and as a matter of fact have to have one done today at 10:30 on my shoulders and back. They use one thing to do the shocks first. That does not really hurt, but it will make your muscles jump. Then they use the needle and put that on the nerve ending and they do have to move it around a bit and it will register on the screen, it is also noisey. I am sure your doc is good and if they know what they are doing it goes pretty quick. Afterwards you might have a bit of irritation in the nerves but it isn't bad. Good luck to you.

We talked about this awhile back...here's the thread.

It's easier to post the URL for the thread than to we-write my posts!
