Question regarding herniated disc
      #130787 - 01/22/04 10:11 AM

Hi All!

If there is anyone online that has problems similar to mine I have a question. I have a ruptured lumbar disc as well as a herniated cervical disc with radiculpathy. Mon night as I was walking to my car at work I fell in the ice hard, flat on my back and my bottom. I went to the ER and the only pain I had (other then the normal) was my right arm, which was sprained with possible fracture (they couldn't be sure because of the amount of fluid built up) but anyway yesterday(Wednesday) I went back to work (A job where I sit all day). By mid to late afternoon my back was in severe pain. nausea, hot feeling, dizzy etc. Sitting at my desk has always aggrivated my back. My problem is this, I got up this morning in extreme pain, off the scale, had a really hard time getting out of bed. I had my PCP paged, and waited and waited, In the meantime something strange and to be honest quite scary is that when I have the urge to go to the potty I can not hold it, I can not det to the toilet fast due to my back and arm. I dont fully pee my pants but I definately can not hold it. Im sorry to be so gross but this is making me nervous, so I called the PCP's office after they opened and was told by the NP that My Dr is on vaccation and that she never got the message from the ans service (She was really pissed and apologized) After I told her what was going on she told me to go striaght to the ER that even if my Dr was here He would tell me the same thing. Now I am really worried, so I call the ER and spoke with a nurse, she told me I need to be seen asap, so I go on to tell her about my potty problem and I asked her if this is bad? Her tone changed and she said I need to go there right away and that she can not diagnose over the phone, I told her I can not drive in this shape and I can not get a hold of anyone at the moment, She said she highly reccomended that I call an ambulance. Well I may be a dummy but I am not calling an ambulance, no way, I finally have a ride, I am waiting now but can anyone tell me if they have had this problem? The NP and the Nurse at the ER have me really scared..........

Anything you can tell me to make me feel better?
Thanks
Tray

There is a possibility that if you are NOT ABLE to control your bladder that you could have spinal cord compression. This is a medical emergency and you need to be evaluated and have a CT scan of your lumbar spine ASAP.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Just got back, pain is from the disc on the nerves, and the potty thing was a UTI so I am fine. They gave me a shot for the pain, I dont know what it was but I still can barely keep my eyes open. Need to follow up with the Orthapedic in the am.

Thank you for thinking of me, I appreciate it.

The pain from herniated discs can make life downright miserable. I had 2 in my lumbar spine 3yrs ago and I still have difficulty driving. I'm glad you are getting some relief. Take care of yourself and good luck with the ortho.

Get yourself to the doc. I prefer a neurosurgeon myself. Bladder and bowel are a L-5, S-1 function. Good luck sweetie.

so sorry

Thank you Zoe and Arthur,

I am doing much better today, Im not sure what they gave me at the hospital(I know I should have asked but I was in too much pain to care) but whatever it was I can still feel the effects of it this morning so my guess is morphine, The ER doc was so nice, He really was sympathetic and kept telling the nurses "Take it easy on her, shes been thru enough today" Can you imagine? It makes me wonder if he has been thru something similar himself, definately not the norm. I am going to call the Ortho's office as soon as they open up so I can hopefully get in asap. I have a feeling he will probably send me back to the Neuro as you said Zoe. I just hope this is temporary because I need to get back to work asap. Thank you all for your concern!

I too have herniated cervical discs with radiculopathy and the pain radiates through my shoulder and down the arm, which is he11 by itself, so I couldn't imagine the pain associated with both of your problems(upper and lower back) I really feel for you and hope you get the treatment that you need and deserve. Please keep us posted on your condition, I'm quite sure the bladder thing scared the pee out of you (no pun intended), heck, it scared me just reading about it. Best of luck to you and keep in touch.

D

Traqr,

WOW...how scary!! Thank you for updating us. Sounds like a scary thing...I have herniated disks, spinal stenosis and sciatica. My boss had emergency surgery after he lost all control of his bowels, so I really watch my synmptoms carefully. I am truly relieved that your deal was "just" a UTI (although not fun by any means!). Anyway, keep an eye on your lower back stuff, you don't want to take a chance, I don't...too scary.

Good luck, Traqr.

Jilly
