Hydro causes me to have irregular periods sometimes, I was usually right on time each month, now it seems that each month is different. Anyone else experiencing the same problem?

I'm so glad you posted this question! I've been experiencing the exact same thing. I also have a huge increase in my pain level before I actually start.
It's been bugging me for quite some time and I was worried that something NEW was bothering me.
I'll be interested in hearing others replies.

I to have had irregular periods. I actually skipped last month completly, and I still have not had one. I thought I was pregnant but I have the IUD and I took a test and it was negative. I took hyrdo last month then ran out and stopped then was on nothing for 2 weeks then started taking it again this past monday, and so far no period yet.
The weird thing is I have been eating ALOT like anything I can get my hands on, I only weigh 118 lbs, but after all I have eaten I think I have gained about 2 lbs.

I guess you don't know that Acetaminophen is used to stop bleeding. Women used to use it to stop their periods from starting like for instance, if they were supposed to get married and wanted to delay their period they would take Acetaminophen in large doses. So when you take your pain meds they can effect bleeding. I used to work as a pharmacy technician and I asked the pharmacist about it. Hope this explains it!

WOW,
I thought I was the only one, I was scared. I skipped last month too, nothing came, no cramps, nothing, is this healthy?
I am kinda scared, we should get this every month, I think!
I am not pregnant either and yes I eat more when I am on it, I wonder why?

I recently starting taking Hydro. Well since Sept 03. I used Tropical that month and then in Oct had no meds. It wasn't until Nov that I used a consult OP and began to take it regularly. In Oct I had a very weird period. It lasted 2 days and was very light. My whole life I have been regular like clockwork. 28 1/2 days apart. 4 HEAVY days, skip 1 day and then 6th day is light. Nov was light as was Dec. THe above poster did give us the answer though about APAP being used to control bleeding.
Now somewhat off topic, I have noticed my pms is alot worse since taking Hydro. The week before I start my period I have always been cranky, irritable and well I want to beat my husband hehe poor guy. But I know I get like this so I do the best I can, eat very little salt, chocolate and since I quit drinking coffee its gotten better. But I have noticed since the hydro I get WAY more cranky and have nill patience. I simply have been dealing with it the way the way I always have, awareness is key. Still it doesn't make it easier to deal with. I guess I should be grateful it only lasts a week and then I am back to normal because I really dislike how I feel and act that week each month.

Me too, Ive noticed myself getting alot crankier with everyone, including my hubby and even getting mad at my 2 cats! Can you imagine, poor things! Hopefully my schedule will get back to normal because I am cutting back on my Hydro usage and using Ultram instead.

kayleighbear- don't be shy around here! We all love you anyway!
I'm not sure about hydro (as it has never been my regular pain med) but I have been on methadone for 8 years. I was on a high dose of it prior to having my hysterectomy and I can definitely say that it messed up my biological clock. I could have set my watch to my periods before methadone, and I ended up wasting obscene amounts of money on pregnancy tests because of it!

Having a period is not actually bleeding. Its the lining of your uterus(sp) that cycles. I don't understand it myself so I asked my doctor. I was having really heavy periods after I had my tubes tied and wasn't on birth control. I told my doctor I thought I was going to bleed to death. He kinda laughed and explained to me what was going on. He put me back on birth control to help with the heavy monthly.

Thank you nightshade! What a nice thing to say.
I'm like you tho, before I got my tubes tied, I kept thinking I was preggo AGAIN. But it was the same after the tubes were tied...
I need to go to my OB for a check-up and I'll ask him about it.

It weird how everyones body is different, I took fioricet for years and it never gave me irregular periods, but when I started the norco I noticed it, I have the IUD so I bleed alot anyway. I still have not started my period and I am a little scared about that, since the IUD can shift. But I am going to call the doctor on monday and see if I can get in and get some answers as to why I have not had one. I just want to understand why I have been eating so much food, it is sickening, my hubby and I were watching a movie last night and he said "What is the heck are you eating now" I just laughed and continued to eat my fruit salad. I did not know that tylanol (sp) stopped the bleeding or calmed it down, as much firoicet as I took years back it never made me miss a period, strange, maybe it is the norco combo with the tylonel that is slowing me down, but I have not missed a period like this in a long long long time. I also get really cranky and tired right before my period starts so I have been so tired, and my boobs got huge for about a week then they went back down, I am also bloated maybe cause of all the food I have been eating, I weighed 115 a week and a half ago and now I weigh about 119 so I have to calm down the food intake most defitienly. And I thought I was the only one, good to know that I can talk about this with other people who have the same problems, so thanks girls

Hello everyone.
I am so glad that someone finally came forward about this. I am new here, but reading the posts in every forum for quite some time. And this is just the thing I was looking for. Last year, I started having really irregular periods (1 a week) and thought, Oh, its just my age. Finally last March, I broke down and went to my Dr and we did an ultrasound. But that turned up nothing. Then just over the holidays,(thanksgiving to be exact), I started a period and low and behold it just barely ended. My Dr gave me some provera to stop the bleeding, but with the severe cramps and backache, motrin and aleve were not cutting it. So I asked for some pain medication which she gave me. Now I have an appt with an OBGYN on the 28th to discuss the possiblities of hysterectomy. Does anyone else think this would be a wise decision? I am really tired of all this irregular periods, and becuase of the recent bleeding problem, I was concerned that I would acutally have to require surgery based on a emergency situation. And I dont want to have to wait until that happens. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreicated.
Thanks :

That kinda scares me since I have not have my period at all in December and nothing yet in January so far, so I am scared that when I start I won't stop. So how long did you go without having a period?

Hi IttIbit
Not sure who you are asking this question to, but for me, I started a period thanksgiving day, and it just ended about 4 days ago. Prior to that, I was having them every week. It would stop, then start again. It has been a real pain. But if you ask me, if I could know for certain, that this was the last hoorah before it all ended, I would wait it out. But no one can tell for sure

I have been on hydro for over a year but I do give myself week long holidays here and there. It just so happened that my hydro holiday last week coincided with my menstrual cycle, and BOOM! full fledged flowage that I have not had in months! At least I know that i'm not pregnant as normally, monthly, I buy many preggo tests just to make sure...not that a baby would be a bad thing, very much wanted and welcome, but both my boys were planned and I really am not looking forward to surprises!
The last year or so, I did have periods, irregular when I am used to be strictly regular. The flow was lighter and shorter also.
This period off hydro has been very heavy and many days longer. I would even say that periods on hydro are more like a little spotting than anything, definitely not tampon-worthy. On the other hand, this particular period right now requires doubling up on everything!
Sorry guys for the female education!

I am still on the hydro as I don't take it every day, and I started my period last night, thank god, it looks like a regular one for me. But I do remember last month when i was off the hydro I did spot for like 2 days then stopped completly. Thanks for the responses.

Thought I'd just offer a gentle admonition to those women out there whose hydro usage causes no periods or light periods - while you may be whooping for joy that there is one less inconvenience to contend with every month, IT DOES NOT MEAN YOU CANNOT GET PREGNANT! Read that line again, because it's pretty important.

Ok ladies - here I go again - just a "bit" off topic, but.....
I'm a tad bit older than y'all - 53. Had a hysterectomy at age 38 (yeah!), but still have tubes/ovaries. Has anyone who is menopausal noticed a change in symptoms while on hydro? I'm finding that since starting hydro, I'm getting a return of hot flashes and night sweats - even while on HRT. (I'm on an extremely low dose of estrogen only - no progesterone.)I've been following this thread, and I'm curious.
And one more thing (sorry):
lttlbit, darlin'...if you mention 115 lbs. again...well, sweety...I'm just gonna have to take you out back and slap you around a little! Just hose you down 'till it's over!!! (JK - You know I luv ya darlin'! I'm so jealous I could spit!) Oops! Not very lady-like language is it? Where's my bar of soap???
Hugs all!

Miss Ettikit...perhaps the hot flashes & night sweats are more of a side effect of hydro than of menopause. I'm 32, definitely not going through menopause, but hydro causes my body temp to be higher than normal & I sweat more, particularly at night.
Its been quite cold in NY lately but I still need to sleep on top of my blankets in just a tee & undies with the window open or I just can't sleep due to excessive heat.
BTW, I've found that Lady Mitchum invisible gel antiperspirant works wonders!

HEE! I am a gigglin' fool right now, Miss E.
Anyway, I got yer back on this one, LP. I've got a couple of years on you but until I found out that hydro can cause hot flashes and sweating I was thinking that I might be pre-menopausal. Well, I guess I am pre-menopausal if you take it literally but I thought that I was on my way to becoming REALLY menopausal. I wasn't sure whether to be relieved that decades of paranoia and inconvenience were about to be over (I'm talking about pregnancy scares and menstrual cycles, not the inconvenience of having a houseful of kids...but now that you mention it...) or upset that I was "mature" enough to reach menopause. Talk about conflicted!
So then I saw my OB-Gyn who set me straight. Oh well.

Although I have NO basis for first-hand menstrual advice (have different hardware), you may be affected by the APAP (acetaminophen) which is a surprisingly powerful fever reducer that can greatly influence body temperature.
Unfortunately, hydrocodone is not available as a branded product without the accompanying acetaminophen. (hydrocodone by itself is a schedule II substance, but the inclusion of the APAP makes it schedule III). Bad news for the liver and biothermostat, but great news for me as I have been spared the burden of periods by gender.
I'm actually quite surprised to have made a post on the subject of female menstruation, when by virtue of two marriages, I've learned the best thing I (indeed ANY man) can do regarding this subject is to keep my mouth shut.
I hope this helps.

Hey ya'll! I haven't posted in a LONG time because I have been dealing with a lot of stuff and basically sitting on my couch feeling sorry for myself (I'll get into that later). Buy anyway-I had to reply to this topic. Aunt Flo has been quite strange in her timing with me as well. I can go three months without her coming to visit, and other times she comes knocking at the door without notice and she knocks hard! But other times, it only lasts about 2-3 days, very light, usually no PMS. Every woman's body is different. Just wanted to share my experience to let you know that there are MANY women out here that are going through the same thing. Personally, I would be happy never to see her ever again....but since I am only 26, I think she'll be around for a lonnnnnnnnnnggggggggggggggg time.

"Aunt Flo"? It's official. I've soiled myself with laughter.
Perhaps there could be a thread in an appropriate forum for euphamisms.

Since I have the IUD, when I have my period I am on it for an average of about 10 days sometimes 12, that sucks so bad, but it is better then being pregnant. does anyone know why women bleed so bad with the IUD? I have the older cooper one. I also get so bloated all 115lbs of me (LMAO). Well I am actually now 120 since I am on my period. Does anyone else just hate the term "On the rag" I have always hated that term. Just thought I would add that in.

Wish I could help you out with info about the IUD, but honestly, I didn't realize it was even still in use. I never used it, but I remember several of my girlfriends having the same sort of problem you're describing with their IUDs. And this was back in the mid 1970s!
"Aunt Flo???" That's a new one for me! We always called her "Aunt Minnie." (As in "Aunt Minni-stration.") And to date myself even further - when we were in high school, and needed "supplies" we asked if anyone had any "guest towels" because "Aunt Minnie" had come to visit. (This was back in the days when young girls weren't "allowed" to use tampons - they were only for married ladies! But - it got you out of gym class once a month!)
Ok - that's it for me on this subject. Haven't had a period since 1989 - and I haven't missed it one bit!!! The only reason I chimed in on this thread was because I seem to be experiencing the same symptoms while on hydro - and at 53, I'm almost post-menopausal. Had everything perfectly under control for years, until I was injured and started taking Norco. Boom! Back come the hot flashes and night sweats! Not fun.
Take care ladies! "Aunt Minnie" is there for a reason (besides making our lives miserable for a week once every 28 days for 40+ years). If we didn't have Aunt Minnie, we wouldn't have our little darlin's.
to everyone!
Miss E
P.S. If anyone ever finds a definitive link - or a good reference source or study, please let me know.

I second that, LP.
Methadone makes me feel "flushed" at different times during the day and the thermostat gets switched from 65* to 85* at regular intervals during the day.
I, too, have had a hysterectomy (when I was 25) but still have my ovaries (and, thus, a cycle without the bleeding)...I get hot flashes, night sweating, involutary muscle jerking (especially at night before I fall asleep) and all kinds of temperature variations throughout each day and night.
It's definitely the meds as I'm 32 and KNOW I'm not menopausal.

OMG-there are MEN contributing to this post??
God bless those of you males who dare to venture into Aunt Flo's lair
With that said, you can be in your 30's and be PERI-menopausal.The upper you get into your 30's,the MORE menapausal you become-the more mood-swings,longer duration, heavier bleeding, scarcity of periods, etc. I don't know about tylenol lessening the bleeding to the point of preventing a period-mine have always been EXACTLY(to the hour!) 28 days apart, except what I was pg w/my kids. This month, oddly,I'm with you guys-it was like a week late, and I swore I was pg Was even eating like a horse(and gyro's no less-a sure sign of pg!)
But-I am happy to say that Aunt Flo just knocked on MY door 2day,and boy was I ever happy to see her!
She's putting her hair in rollers in the bathroom as we speak

Well, I don't know if I'd call it "contributing" exactly... the first time I picked up an IUD, I tried to see if I could receive Pay-Per-View with it...
