First Time I got them I thought they were weak so I researched them...............10mg hydro.....325 act.

maybe switching from Oxy to Hydro was the reason

Yea. That is def. the reason. Speaking of which, katiehlvr1, have you recently switched to the norco from something else. I take the same thing, and they look the same as yours. Where did you get them? Stregth of mine is fine.

I first tried 10/325s after 2-3 years of no opiates/opioids at all & they did absolutely nothing for me, even after tripling the normal dose. I thought it was perhaps just a bad batch so filled my two remaining refills...still nothing. I then switched to 10/500 & finally received pain relief.

Some members have suggested adding an OTC Tylenol tab to the 10/325 in the (probably correct) belief that the additional APAP in some strengths of hydro combinations "boosts" the pain relief but unfortunately for me, adding an "outside source" of APAP didn't produce the desired effect.

Just my personal experience.

I think alot depends on your 'type' of pain...

For instance - I find that Vicoprofen 7.5/200 (Hydro/Ibuprofen) works better for me than ANY of the hydro/apap combo's (even the 10mg ones) - One single Vicoprofen, to me, works better than a 10/325 Hydro, even with 2.5 less mg's of hydro... Strange. But Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory and Tylenol is not - so that is probably the reason, or part of it (my pain involves inflammation) - So, I dunno.... Different strokes for different folks. As far as hydro/apap I also like the 10/500 the best, the generic Lortab 10's.... They seem the best. That's what I normally request, even though I like the Vicoprof better - because I can't afford the Vicoprofen....

can't say why but the -325s never were as effective as the -500 of apap... hmmm.

Yes zeuzjuz, Vicoprofen works as well if not better for me than do the 10/500s but like you I find them too expensive for regular use. I use an OP that scripts rather high quantities of Lortab but will not script the same quantities of Vicoprofen, even the new Teva generic.

I think ibuprofen is a much better booster than APAP...most people I know who have tried Nurofen Plus (12.8 mg codeine & 200 mg. ibu) are very pleasantly surprised with the level of pain relief obtained from such a small dose of codeine. N+ was/is always popular because the caplets could be split so one could ingest the codeine only but they didn't work nearly as well that way...it must be the ibuprofen.

Zeuzjuz & Lovepink~

It is my understanding that they now make generic Vicoprofen, which should be affordable to you. Also, I believe the Vicoprofen works better for you because of the Ibuprofen in it- is an anti-inflammatory. I have had Vicoprofen prescribed to me in the past, and I agree that it causes more relief-especially when swelling or bloating is involved!

Julz,
If you find any more info on the Generic Vicoprophen, by all means let us know. That is definitely more effective for me than any H/APAP combo, but it is rather pricy. Thanks.

Hi Julz! Thank you - yes, I know that Teva makes a generic for Vicoprofen but for some odd reason, OP doctors who are more than willing to script 120+ Lortabs will not script more than 90 Vicoprofens for me. To obtain the quantity of Vicos that I'd need to function I'd be required to DD (with the additional consult fees, etc.) & I'd like to avoid that.

If anyone knows of an OP doctor that will script 120+ of the generic Vicoprofen ~ preferably from personal experience ~ please let me know via post or PM.

Thanks again

Katie,
I am experiencing the same thing with the Watson 10/325. I have the exact ones you have. I have been taking them and they seem very weak. They don't help as much with the pain and just make me itch all day. I actually went from Lortab 7.5/500 and they worked much better. I just had a new consult and thought I should go to the higher dose and less Tylenol. I am sorta regreting it now. Also, I have two refills of this stuff. What to do?

Got the Vintage 10/325's from BuyMeds last time, and loved 'em. Got the Watson brand this time and didn't really notice a difference. Fresh and strong, no complaints!

I have taken a 10-325 with one Ibuprofen 200 (OTC - Motrin) and the pain relief was incredible. I only do this on my worst days. Just a thought ...

What you got was the generic version of Norco, made by Watson. Interestingly, the brand name Norco is also made by Watson.

It's entirely possible that the lower amount of tylenol in the Norco (325 mg) is the reason for less pain relief. After all, Tylenol *IS* a pain reliver. A "regular strength" Tylenol is 325mg. An "extra strength" Tylenol is 500mg.

Tylenol has a reputation as being bad for your liver. But taken in moderate doses, it's entirely safe for your liver. Docs used to say no more than 4000mg of Tylenol per day. I've heard recently that you shouldn't take more then 2000mg of Tylenol a day, if you take it daily. You could take 4 10/500's and just reach that limit.

If you need more than 4 10/500's you probably shouldn't be taking hydro anyway. Hydro, in all it's formulations, is designed for ACUTE pain, not CHRONIC pain. (acute being "short term", chronic being long term.) There are meds with ZERO tylenol that are much more appropriate for chronic pain....

Fishdude,

What other meds do you suggest for them if they do have chronic pain?

Samcali,
same here, i switched from 10/500 lortab to 10/325 watson 853 835 whatever,
the watson lortab are much stronger and i know what you mean about the itching,
i couldnt sleep last night//////
however concerning the rest of the board acephetamine (sp) works well with hydro, if you take a OTC tablet with hydro it will boost the effect.... I just wanted to take some time off of the big dogs 10/500 apap and settle a month with the 325, but there will be no settling anymore =)

Oxycontin
Methadone
Duragesic (Fentanyl patches)
MSContin (time release morphine)
Kadian (time release morphine)

All Schedule II, none available via OPs, and you'd need to find a good, caring, and knowlegable pain mgmt doc---none of which is easy.

Hi All - Yep Lovepink, my experience is so very similar to yours, as are my views on this subject.
Problem w/ me is that I have paranoia about Ibuprofen cuz it tore up my Mother's stomach before I finally hooked her up with a Hospice program before she died, and thus she had all the morphine sulphate, and everything else I thought she should have for cancer pain.

I learned a great deal about pain control through that experience; and from my personal struggles with two herniated discs and some other problems, mostly neurological in nature.
I'm glad you guys have been discussing the Vicoprofen vs
Watson 325's again - for example - which we have discussed before in great detail.

I'm thankfull to you guys because I don't know when I may have figured out my most recent problem and remedy for which I am now capable of articulating. I hope the following experience will help somebody else. I'll try to be brief.

Hydro alone only helps my condition a little, adding Ibuprofen aka Vicoprofen augments pain control significantly whereas adding APPAP aka Watson 325 does little if anything but it's no biggie - I keep my liver enzymes in check cuz of the meds I take for hyperlipidemia (which, for what it's worth is only controlled by lots of oatmeal yummm LOL or simply not eating but several bites of food each day throughout the day - which equals 'very' little). I've had a script for Mobic (a good NSAID) for a while and had not figured out how to best use it 'till last night! I waited to take it at bedtime, and this morning was the first morning since I can remember that I had some spring to my step as well as having, in general, a better morning, having taken Watson 325's during the daytime, supplemented with a little Butalbital in the late afternoon when the hydro is wearing off.

This is proving to be the best medication regime I've found. Too bad that most people can't use Mobic unless they have insurance. It come close to Maxalt or Imitrex in terms of cost. I suppose though with all the numerous types of NSAIDS available others may find something more affordable
(compare Celebrex, Vioxx, etc etc etc - though some of these have untoward side effects for me, whereas Mobic
( a relatively 'tiny' little pill) works best.
(fingers crossed).
Blessings to all, especially the Peacemakers and those who know that we are all brothers and sisters and are one and the others keeper. No other spirit of thought will do!!
BTW - zeuzjuz expressed one of my points precisely. So much depends on the type of pain you have in terms of finding the most effective treatment. I don't think it can be said any better than Socrates (I think said) "know thyself."
Easier said than done I know, but in listening to others, and learning (as a habit) it can be done before you hair is completely gray
However, if one takes sufficient amounts of PABA ones' hair , and hair color, is amenable to natural change for the better Also one can 'wear' PABA - as in the kind of sunscreen that contains it (but ingest it in pill form, don't eat sunscreen!!! LOL)
Thanks to DB and all you good people.

MT aka Foxfire48

I had the same problem with the 10/325's being noticably weak. I kept thinking it was all in my head. That or a tolerance issue. When I found that 7.5/500's were actually more potent, I knew it wasn't tolerance. Unfortunately, I had already wasted hard earned cash on refills. My advice is simple. Cut your losses and dump them right away! If the 10/325's don't work for you now, they never will. Get in touch with your OP and see if they'll let you go back to what previously worked for you. The reduced tylenol is great in theory, but if you have to double doses to get the same relief then what good are they?

Hiya Dasani!

Lovepink posted that the pharmaceutical company Teva makes it- I believe it is called Vicophen. If I were you, on your next consult, mention it to your Doctor, maybe he/she will switch your current Rx to that. Then there's the matter of whatever pharmacy they use carrying it (?)
I had a script for brand Vicoprofen awhile back, but it really did a number on my kidneys, so I'm done with it myself.
Good luck!

Peace,
Julz
