Naloxone(Narcan)
      #127831 - 01/09/04 12:23 PM

Can anyone tell me how long this drug remains in my system.
I'm scheduled for oral surgery next week and am told to expect severe pain for a few days after procedure.
I understand this med(Naloxone)will block the effects of all narc.pain med's.
Thanks for any advice,
mike m

What mode of ingestion for the naloxone? Oral? I'm fairly certain it's ineffective unless used intravenously. Even then, it shouldn't last more than a day, probably just a matter of hours - if that long. But don't take my word for it. Do you mean naltrexone, rather? It lasts much longer.

When you think it's beyond your comprehension, it probably just precedes it.

Yes I second that it is called Naltrexone. Used succesfully for alcohol abatement and heroin too. Some 'quickie" withdrawal clinics use it to get you off opiates (hydro, oxy, etc). It's like anything, the longer you are on it the better it will work. If you have been on it long term (60-90 days+) then you may have a problem with the pain medication not working. If you've been on it less than that and you stop it for a week before the surgery, you should be OK, but you may have to increase the dosage on the pain medication.

Or, for example, if I took some naltrexone this morning and then hydro this afternoon, the hydro would not "work".

I've done a lot of research on this subject, and I actually took it 4 years ago when I was trying to stop drinking (which I have). It actually stopped the craving for alcohol, and even when I "insisted" on drinking, after 3 drinks I just didn't feel like drinking anymore-which was unheard of for me. It's not like Antabuse, which makes you physically sick if you drink. It blocks the effects of the alcohol/opiates, and eventually takes away the "craving" for it.

When I was diagnosed with the disease I have, which is very painful, fortunately the naltrexone did not cause a problem with the hydro I started taking. But I assume it would have if I had been taking it at the time. Fortunately it had been about a year since I had taken any.

When I get better, I will get some more to help me kick the hydro, as I assume it would work well for that too.
