Will Codeine Help With Oxy Withdrawals? HELP!!
      #126633 - 01/05/04 12:55 AM

Hello all, I hope you are well!

I have been taking Oxycodone 5mg for a long while now. I usually take 3 in the morning and 3-4 at night. so a total of about 7 (35mg) a day of Oxycodone (Not Oxy Contin!)

What I want to do is taper off. I see that I only have about 30 5mg Oxycodone pills left and my Insurance just expired. Therefore I need to taper off instead of just stopping cold turkey and go through those horrific withdraws.

I was thinking of buying 15mg or 30mg pills of Codeisian to try and help taper off.

I have never taken them(codiesian pills) before so I have no idea as to how 15mg of Codeine compares with 5mg of Oxycodone.

If you can please give me some advice as to what and how much to take I would greatly appreciate it!!

Thankyou !

It will help, but there is no way to avoid feeling some discomfort. I would recommend buprenorphine.

You better order right away! IOP's take on average at least 2-3 weeks to deliver. I assume you are in the USA.

I'll leave it to some of my brothers in arms here to specify a dosage. I would say though at least 150mg every 5 hours of so. A good thing about the Codeisian is you don't have to poison yourself with Tylenol.

If you peruse the forums, you will find many good posts here on how to handle W/D's.

Never heard of this. I assume it isn't OTC?

Your post makes it sound like you are recommending a dose of 150mgs of buprenorphine every 5 hours. I want to clarify that is a lethal dose of bupe. Not to mention that it would cost thousands to order the .2 or .3 mg sublingual tabs from IOPs at that dose range.

I see, however, that you were probably referring to Codesian when you suggested a dosage. I just wanted to make sure that the original poster didn't make a mistake in reading your post.

Codeine would help oxy withdrawal. You really aren't taking THAT much oxy (relatively) and therefore, I would suggest a much smaller dose of codeine. Read the label on whatever codeine product you have or get to determine the per unit codeine strength--it differs greatly in different products. I'd start at 30-60mgs 3 times a day (or even twice a day) and reduce as tolerated for however long it takes.

Since the origianl poster mentioned they still had 30 oxys left, maybe alternate one codeine dose with an oxy dose.

This can be done so many ways. Just reduce as tolerated based on your supply. You can use many OTC products including Immodium to help withdrawal symptoms as needed. There are so many threads on this topic that you should be able to find lots of good information on specifics here.

Best of luck!

I know that you're referring to Oxycodone, but a friend of mine was recently on 80mg of OxyCotin and she was able to taper off pretty easily without major discomfort. She needed a holiday because they weren't having the same effect and she didn't want her dose increased anymore. She used codiene to help.

I've got an idea, though. You say that you're insurance has expired. I was wondering if you might have one of those rare, compassionate doctors who can help you. I wonder if you might be able to call your doctor, explain your position with your insurance and tell him that you'd like to taper off and would like his assistance. With that, explain that you'd like to taper off and use codiene to do so ask if he'd ever-so-kindly would phone in the RX for you. You see, codiene is very inexpensive and you don't have to waste money on an office visit.

I sure hope this helps!

Thanks everyone for the help!

As to Lemon grass's Q. my doctor is really not helpful with pain. For some reason where I live most doctors rarely prescribe anything more than T3 for a Best if kept off the board wisdom tooth pull.

I have been getting some major surgery done on my jaw and mouth for the past year and it was hell to get my doc to prescribe anything higher than T3.
Trust me, I needed it.Wih the Oxycodone I was able to go to work, go back to college and live my life.

Now due to the harsh regs the doctors in my area must be under, I need to stop taking the meds that help me live my life.

Sorry for ranting and I am not trying to play the whole "poor me" game. Its just feels like pain is used to oppress people. I know that may sound crazy. But after a 4 hour long surgery in my mouth (over and over again), I have to be made to feel like an addict when I ask for something for pain or call the office for a refill once a month.

There I go ranting again!

Anyhow, what I did was order something from 247-drugstore. I know their prices aren't the best, but from what many have said they are really fast on shipment.

Perhaps I can go to another city and the docs are different, I'll try.
I just thought that we were guaranteed the pursuit of happiness in this country. When you have debilitating pain, happiness is a pipedream.

hi night_shade

I shouldn't post when I'm tired. I absolutely meant 150mg of Codeine not Buprenorphine.

Slightly changing the subject, somebody PM'ed me the other day asking about a source for Buprenorphine. I wrote what I thought his/her options were. What I strongly recommended was find a doctor on this link:

http://www.buprenorphine.samhsa.gov/bwns_locator/index.html

That's what I did and I am extremely satisfied with my visit to the shrink.

Then I was going to give him/her a reference to a honest/reliable IOP. After reading the rules about posting on DB, I became worried about advising folks to engage in illegal activities. It's not clear to me if ordering from IOP's is illegal especially since Customs has the right to seize your order.

I don't want to get kicked off DB. There is such a wealth of valuable diversity of opinion here.

Thanks again for correcting my ambiguity.

Completely understand! Just wanted to be SURE the origianl poster didn't try taking so much bupe!

There's a whole section of forums on IOP's here, so yes, you can post about them without fear of getting the boot from DB admins.

Have a great day!

247D is quick & reliable with usually fine customer service to boot.

yes, it sounds like your regular dose of Oxy, although not that high, will most definately cause some discomfort & displeasures for a few days ~ depends on how long you've been using it regularly. codeine should help out with most bad headaches during the Oxy detox, but your body will still ache for a few days.

personally, i've used the Tems (.2SLs), benzos, ultram, hot baths, a few aspirins, & some codeine VERY sparingly here & there. it did the job when my tolerence to Hydro got a 'lttle out of hand'. i know Oxy & Hydro give similar, yet different, kinds of w/d's... as well as does Codeine! use the codeine as necessary, but do not end up substituting one for another if you are trying to give up pain meds altogether!

VERY IMPORTANT>>> the above meds i listed should not be used if you are already NOT familiar with them, & how they react to YOU personally!!!

also... what kind of Jaw/Mouth surgery have you been going thru? i ask cuz i have some problems with my jaw as well ~ both halves seem to be not lining up properly & i think a lot of my headache pain comes from this problem.
you can PM me if you like.
