Fentynal Patch
      #123851 - 12/18/03 11:20 PM

I just put on my first Fentynal patch. Anyone know anything about this type of painkiller. Dr. didn't tell me much. I do know it is a 50mg patch and is supposed to last 3 days. I don't know much more than that. Any info would be greatly appreciated

In my opinion, I would stay away unless you really need it and have a very serious condition that requires fentanyl.

I was on the Duragesic, and it was not a good ride for me as pain meds suit my pain levels.

If medication in the pill form does not help your chronic pain, then the Dr. is supposed to precribe a Patch or I should say that the Dr, can resort to it.

As far as what to expect, You may be groggy at first, and sleepy alot untill your body adjusts to it. This can be temporary, and you may get naseua.
It does take about 2-3 days to kick in as it is absorbed through the skin resoirvors and then it keeps steady. Your first dose should not kick in quick. It took me 2-3 doses to keep steady. And be careful, go to the website and order the tape if you plan being on long term. I remember that they tend to fall off, with hot showers they can just slide off an hour later. That happened to me many times, they also leave a sticky grey residue in the shape of a square.
I had to buy a special spunge at bath-n-body to wash off the residue from the glue on it.

Were you put on 50mcg to start? That is co-intraticted. Normally, they start with 25mcg and then up your dosage to 50, 75, or even 100mcg if needed. Some people are fine with not uppping the doses and having breakthrough meds instead.

May I ask why you were converted over or to it and from what Med? You can PM me. I can tell you alot of the bad side affects, but everyone is different. For some, it supposedly works wonders. Good luck, and I have alot of knowledge from being on it in the past. Getting off of it was tough- keep that in mind. My Dr, also did not inform me about much. I hopethat you have luck with it !

I have chronic pancreatitis and every dr. I have been to says that more than likely I willm have to take pain meds to control the pain. I have been taking Lortab 10/325 for a while and I feel like I am on a roller coster. My Dr. then swithed me to MS Contin which didn't help with the pain at all. My Dr. doesn't believe in prescribing OXycontin so he gave me the patch. I held on to it for a month before I decided to try it. I applied it around 8:00 pm and it is about 3:30 am now. Did you get a buzz off of it? I kind of feel like I am feeling funny right now.

Why do you say it is not a good thing?

I would love to hear your insight on this. I don't know how to PM. So if you could tell me how, i would like to talk with you about this.

It can take 16+ hours to begin to feel pain relief after applying your first patch. And 9 days (3 patches) to get to the therapeutic blood level of Fentanyl.
