I was in the test group for the FDA for Imitrex and my doctor knows this. Anytime a new migraine med comes out he gives me samples, information packets, and a log book. I am one of those people who take hydro for a different condition, they do nothing for my migraines but make the side symptoms worse.
Axert is the one I have just finished trying out. It is a triptan. Up until now my favorite has been Imitrex but this is even faster, and I had no episodes of two hours later the headache returning. It must be working really well for others also, my local Mom&Pop pharmacy said no one in town can keep it in stock.
I am about to try a new one: Relphax. It is also a triptan. I will let ya'll know how it goes.
My sister is a nurse, she said many patients don't want to take anything new when she is trying to give them samples. My suggestion is this, if you volunteer to try out new meds for your doctor, they will frequently give you lots, the new ones, plus ones they already know work for you. This can save a lot of money, even with insurance these meds are pricey. You will get the information packets and Rx'ing info which will provide better details of what to expect and interactions to beware of. I know when Imitrex first hit the scene a lot of doc's, nurses, and patients assumed people were allergic or having a bad reaction because of the way it initially made them feel. If they had read the information packets they would have known that the intense discomfort some people feel shortly after taking it is normal, so is a temporary rise in blood pressure, and several other temporary side effects as the drug begans to work. Because the "professionals" did not do their homework some people now stay away from a class of drugs that IMO is no less than a miracle drug.
In addition to the above reasons to try new migraine meds there is this fact: if you show yourself willing to try non-narcotic treatments you are less likely to be labeled a drug-seeker, and may have an easier time getting narcotic pain relief when you need it most.

I've tried Relpax, so did my daughter, it didn't work. Another one you may want to try that is supposed to be a kinder, gentler triptan is Frova. I got samples of it too. They work for my daughter, but not me. For some reason, the triptans just give me a tension headache on top of my migraine. They don't help with nausea, etc. But, she liked the Frova. Give it a shot too!

Sweetz-
In full agreement about the triptans. Imitrex was so bad that I got muscle rigidity in most of my body requiring ER attention. I've been too afraid to try other triptans because of this bad reaction. I also have high blood pressure and other cardiac issues, so I'm not sure I would be a candidate for these drugs anyway.
I really do find lots of relief in good old Excedrin Migraine coupled with Phenergan. It's a staple migraine regimen for me.

I am doing the same thing, I try the samples the doc gives.
He just gave me a bunch of Axert but I have to take my BP when I do to make sure it doesn't skyrocket. He also gave ma a bunch of Vioxx, which hasnt't worked yet but I am trying anything and everything I can!

Night,
Do you get the Phenergan in pill form? When I was at the ER day after xmas for migraine, they gave me phenergan, torodol & demerol all interveniously (sp?). It worked like a charm! Maybe the phenergan coupled with the Fiorcet that I have will work, taking Fiorcet by itself is not working, nor is the Axert or Vioxx. Thanks for your help!

Yep- 50mgs a pop of oral Pherergan cures lots of things! Nausea associtaed with anything and helps me sleep. I take it at least once a day (for months now) with no ill effects.
Demerol with Vistaril or Demerol with Phenergan IM (I hate it IV) does the job on any migraine that isn't knocked out with Excedrin/Phen/and sleep.
