Ultram Curiousity
      #125425 - 12/29/03 06:36 PM

I know very little about Ultram. I have been reading through the posts on the board and have read different opinions. I did read in my PDR that if you are taking an SSRI like prozac it greatly increases your chances for seizures. It also seems that some people say WD's are worse than hydros. I was wondering if people on the board would write their knowledge and experiences if taking or taken this med. Thanks!

If you do a search, type in "ultram tramadol" as the search words, and use OR as your search option, you'll get lots of existing threads with good information.

Ultram works great for hydro wd, it doesn't do much for pain though. The seizure risk is associated with different types of a-d's and other drugs, and with high dosage -- I take as few as I can, just to get through w-d, to keep the risk of seizure to a minimum. I've never had a seizure and don't want to start, so I'm careful how I take it. The initial dose or two are a strange experience, but the effects change afterwards. You should find as many other opinions and personal experiences as you care to read already on the board.

I have found that if I taper down to no more than three 50 mg caps/day, I can stop with almost no w-d at all -- if you stop taking a high daily dose abruptly, the w-d is bad, but IMO there is no need to experience it if you just taper down.

On Ultram it's best to not take anything else with it to avoid a bad reaction (no sleeping pills or muscle relaxers or similar stuff). The only thing I ever took at the same time was Lortabs and it went okay. As the other poster said, Ultram makes you feel weird when you very first take it. But after a while they (at least to me) are better than hydros or Lortabs, etc. because they last longer and don't make you so extremely tired. The thing is though that soon one tends to increase the dosage as with any meds and a WD after 5-6 per day to nothing is pretty bad. If you can keep it at 2-3 per day and no more than a WD is short and not as painful. Depression is the major symptom of an Ultram WD, plus leg pain and dizziness and balance problems (stuff going on in the head that doesn't in a codeine WD, for instance - almost like being on a weird trip - or perhaps, tiny seizures in an Ultram WD, but no seizures while taking it). At least, that is my experience. May be different with others. But Ultram is not bad if you are able to avoid any other stuff that may interact with it. It isn't hard to avoid other stuff since Ultram works pretty well on its own and lets you sleep nicely after taking it for a while. Actually, if taken for a long period it can give you a similar sleepiness as Lortabs, for instance, but you can control it with strong coffee. I always take a cup of coffee every time I take a pill. At least, I used to. I'm off everything at present. If I'm lucky, I will stay that way.

Forgot to mention, don't know what kind of pain you're in or whoever you are asking this question for, but Ultram is not for intense, acute pain. Like, if one breaks their foot today Ultram would be worthless. It is worthless even for a toothache. It only helps for those chronic pains, like where the intital injury is a year or more old and left permanent damage, and it's chronic now, like arthritis, for instance, like a pain that is always there but isn't acute all the time and is only acute when weather changes or after re-injury. Ultram is only good for that. One still feels the pain but can actually live with it and do one's daily chores because of Ultram. For constant intense pain, it's useless.

think of it as an aspirin that actually works

NOT recommended if you are prone to seizures!
