Question. What really constitutes "doctor shopping"? I visit the ER regularly to get abscess' lanced - probably 5-8 times per year and always leave with a script for pain meds. Does this constitute doctor shopping? Anyone out there know?

Nah, I dont think so.
Doc shopping is when you go all over town to try to get a Doc to give you good meds.

No going to the ER is not doctor shopping.

I would think "Doctor Shopping" is going to several, if not many doctors asking for the same scripts, mainly class 2 or 3..

If you have two scripts from different doctors for the same controlled substance for the same condition, within overlapping refill periods, that is what is illegal (though the laws and penalties vary).
Are you getting the same drug from both doctors? Do they both know about it? Is it within the same timeframe?
The reason you're asking this question is because you want to know if it's legal or not, not to see if what you do amounts to a term used in drug slang. Doctor shopping usually means visiting multiple doctors to get the same drug or type of drug concurrently, for the purpose of supporting a habit. Regardless, it still may be illegal.

I'd agree - someone who was doctor shopping wouldn't go back to the same ER all the time. People who do this also will very often use different pharmacies as well. It's kind of awkward sometimes because I use ONE pharmacy to fill everything (that I don't get from an OP) and there's this one clerk who will look at the list of meds (the last 5 or 10 you've had print out on the receipt) and she always sniffs and says "Just ONE today?".

No you are fine. Doctor shopping is when one goes to a doc for a script and then to another doc for the same script. That will get you in some hot water if there is a monitoring program in your state.

I know that my PM doc had me sign a contract stating I would not seek or receive narcotic prescriptions from any other doctor while under his care, with the exception of the ER or a hospital. So, I don't think you're doing anything wrong.
