Vicoprofen
      #124117 - 12/20/03 12:29 PM

Does anyone have any experience with vicoprofen? Seems like everyone uses the hydro/apap combo. Vicoprofen seems like a good alternative for those who are worried about too much apap as it only has 200 mg. of ibuprofen (combined with 7.5 mg. of hydrocodone). Maybe it is less effective? Just curious.

I found Vicoprofen to be exactly as effective as 10/325, quite frankly. But that's just, you know, me.

I find it to be perfect to add to hydro/apap products both for better pain relief and for lowering daily apap intake.

Vicoprofen is just as effective as Vicodin ES; the only drawback is where the apap does damagae to the liver, the Ibuprofen effects the kidneys. Actually, Vicoprofen is better for pain if you have swelling, as Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory. Just don't take more than prescribed, as with any Rx.

Agreed with everyone else here.
I have an ulcer, so the Vicoprofen isn't an option for me, as well as it being quite expensive I've heard (I don't believe there is a generic version, but I may be wrong). I have heard it works wonderfully for many people, however.

They did finally come out with a generic not too long ago made by Teva.

OK I have ulcers, irritable bowel for which I used to take librax. Around 2000 I went to see my GP who is terrific in Manhattan. Unfortunately, I saw his physician's assistant, who has all the charm of a guy working an EMS truck in Harlem. I had very bad bronchitis. He WOULDN'T give me Tussionex although "I had it myself today, you're not missing anything." Best kept off the board. Then I get shuffled into - before you sell a book and you are waiting for an advance payment it can really wrack your nerves and give you insomnia. I saw some young twerp who had a pocket PDR. I asked for Resoril "How about Ativan?" I said I had a bad reaction to Ativan, give me the restoril. "Oh - you're on librax - no doubling up". I can give you atarax. I know atarax is BEST KEPT OFF THE BOARD it gives me blurred vision and nauseau and hangover.

End result - I called and complained (along with a bunch of patients) about the young jerk with the pocket PDR and he was summarily fired. My GP happened to be doing his gig at Lenox Hill that day. The PA also snatched the cough medicine (phenergal vc) out of my wife's hands saying "you're husband got one" and put her down for breast-feeding. We also complained about that.

A week later I called up demanded vicoprofen (sounds better than vicodin es and people didn't know exactly what it was at the receptionist's desk) and got 30. Then I got 100, then 90, then 90, then another 90, followed by 30 for the last script. Trouble is it did upset my stomach a bit though the pain-killing ability did like what Jerry Lewis said about percodans - it was irritating my stomach but didn't seem noticeable.

In terms of painkilling ability, it was as good as a vicodin es... and more concentrated, the person who said it was like a 325/7.5 is more on the mark. I didn't mind it but I don't like antiinflammatories at all. But you take what you can get. And before it was generic it was way expensive, like about $100 at a mom & pop store for 90 of them, even more at regular chain stores.

I would use them with caution again but would prefer a tylenol compound.

The whole point of this longwinded story - it that the doc I usually see wasn't there, I was mistreated by a jerk PA and a young no-nothing doctor, and this was my GP's way of making it up to me, the bad experience of not seeing him and seeing these two idiots. BTW, my GP would give me 60-90 lorcet 7.5s, librax, soma, and various benzos when needed. Plus it happened in the middle of a freezing winter so the ibuprofen did help the achy bones.

My advice to all: NEVER see a young doctor. They can be the worst and most inexperienced with pain patients. Librax is 5mg librium with a bromide to stop tummy spasms and also to counteract the sedation from the librium. It is a very physical, not a very psychological drug. I do not constitute "doubling up" taking something specifically for your stomach in the daytime and then something to sleep at night. And how much of an idiot was this guy? Not everyone reacts well to Ativan didn't they teach him that in med school? I'm glad I had a hand in making him lose his job.

BTW the first time I heard the term "doubling up" is when Methadone patients would drink one of their take-homes the same day they already dosed and got some for the weekend. so this expression was really, really insulting to me.
