the flu
      #124230 - 12/21/03 11:53 AM

this might be a stupid question,I have never had the flu,and with this years being almost an epidemic,is it still safe to take your pain medications,(norco,)because your body is already in stress from the flu.would the norco add to it,just got in from a vacation, cut shot,my sister has the flu. You know how norco is a cns,so would that be worse to take or should you cut your dosage down during the flu. maybe yawkaw could ans.I didn't pm you yawkaw cause I know you have been busy with your semester ending, thanks everyone and happy holidays, snakey

I've safely taken hydrocodone & stronger narcotics during bouts of the flu & pneumonia. Just be careful of interactions between your hydro and any other med you may be taking (even Nyquil) that may compound the CNS effects.

I've actually taken Norco to help with sore throat (strep) pain. It helped with the fever, the pain, and I was able to get to sleep. Didn't have to take another thing besides antibiotics.

Be especially careful with the Nyquil. The recommended dose of Nyquil has 1000mg of APAP, so watch out for those people already taking large doses of APAP with their pain meds.

Hi snakey,

My semester is over finally, and I'm off for the whole month of January.

Anyone reading this, it's ok to send me a PM- really- every PM I get is like "I hope it's ok to talk to you" or "So sorry to bother you" I don't even know why people phrase it like that- do I come off as an unapproachable a$$hole on the boards? Really, it's ok- unless you are like this crackpot who sent me a PM today. This user has 0 posts, and I will not give them the satisfaction of posting their name. It was in response to another thread about rebound headaches:

"HMMMM???
Let me see...
Take a bottle of clorox douse it with a bit of sugar and acid call it the best pain reliever in the world.

Hydro is a chemical
I can't even handle them at all I puked my guts up for a whole day with severe light sensitivity and migraine like symptoms. SO let me think maybe I should find a different medication. [list] [image]http://[/image] "

What??? I've never talked to this person before, and out of the blue they tell me this- again, WHAT???

But snakey, lovepink and opie already got this question...but what about the issue we were PM'ing about? How are you doing with that? Keep me posted.

-yawkaw

now way you come off like that, studies are important and everyone knows this, except for a certain few, with that I felt it appropriate to leave you to your finals, unless it was a dire emergency lol,as you are always there at a drop of a hat,I see you try and not let a post go unanswered, and heck yawkaw you cannot be everywhere all the time, you need a break too, so I figured if you were not busy you would see the post, and you did, hope you did well on the finals,(I know you did)now get some rest.To answer your question, doing good,I just don't want that flu,and if I did get it I wasn't sure if I could continue with the hydro, even though I don't take that much,I will pm you later in the week.take care snakey

That is scary stuff! 1000 mg.'s? I'm so glad you posted this information, I didn't realize that it would have so much (I need to read the back of OTC meds like I read the contraindications for the prescription meds I take, for the love of Pete!!).

Well I just got over this abosulte HELL! of the flu! It was the worst I have ever had it and I took hydro during it to kill some of the body aches. Actually it was the only thing that I did take during it and they helped me tremendously but again I did not mix it with anything else. Just my experience. Hope this answers your question...

One other thing, Hydrocodone (Norco, Vicodin, etc.) is a CNS depressant. CNS stands for Central Nervous System; it's somewhat confusing to say that a drug is a CNS--I mean, what does the drug in question do to the CNS?

Drugs such as caffeine and amphetamine (Adderal, etc.) are CNS stimulants, while narcotics such as hydro, morphine etc. are CNS depressants.

I've been off the boards for awhile with pneumonia and other very serious issues not to do with pain or health. Just wanted to chime in about safely using hydro during respiratory illness...

I asked for and received Vicodin Tuss (8oz) for the severe cough with my pneumo. I have gotten pneumo 3 times in the past 4 years and have always received the cough syrup. The only problem I have with hydro (as I do not take it regularly) is the spinning room scenario when I try to get to sleep. So, I had to be sure not to use the cough syrup within 4 hours of bedtime. Otherwise it is a very effective remedy for the coughing, chest pain and body aches associated with fever.

Nightshade...this is a new answer to an old post, but have you considered a pneumonia vaccine? They are good for 10 years against bacterial pneumonia, which I had twice in a year. Doesn't help agains viral, though.

Hey Opie-

Yep, had the vaccine 2 years ago (I was getting bacterial pneumonia annually and usually in both lungs) but it doesn't keep them all away--although I did get one year off. Of course, being a smoker doesn't increase the odds any!

Fortunately for me, my doc arranges for day-trips to the hospital for IV antibiotics so I don't have to be admitted. I am such a horrible inpatient!
