I broke the toe next to my pinky toe on my right foot 2 days ago (I heard it crack, it's bent to the side and swollen and extremely bruised and the pain is excruciating when I put any weight on it)...
I have previously broken the same toe on the other foot, which caused the entire left side of my left foot to go numb for over 2 years. It has since returned to normal, but I started carrying my weight differently on the foot when it was partially numb and now have nerve neuromas in it.
Now, I have always been told that broken toes (with the exception of the big toes) aren't really treated by doctors. I'M NOT LOOKING FOR PAIN MEDS as it only hurts severely when I inadvertently put weight on it. My problem is that I had my achille's tendon detached and the calcaneal bone ground down and the tendon reattached in July. This is the same foot as the broken toe and I have not recovered the strength in my Achille's tendon to support any extra strain during walking. I was walking still with a pronounced limp (that was my 2nd surgery for the same problem with my A tendon, by the way) BEFORE the toe incident (I have a murderous coffee table! )...
In addition, I had the same achille's tendon surgery on my other foot, too, about 5 years ago. Once the tendon is detached, you NEVER get full function again. So things like running, standing on toes, etc. have never been regained.
Does anyone know if there is anything that can be done to the toe to facilitate recovery so the strain from my surgery isn't bothered so much?

Nightshade,
I know a doctor may not be able to do too much, but he/she will be able to give you good advice. I would definitely go and see one if you have insurance because this could complicate your current condition. And besides maybe the doctor could do something to help your toe, maybe they'll suggest to wrap you foot a certain way. The only advice I can give is the basics: try to stay off of it, ice it for 20 minutes at a time, keep it elevated, and take an anti-inflammatory around the clock even it doesn't hurt to ehlp the swelling and pain. You're probably already taking the anti-inflammatory for the tendon though. I wish you the best of luck. I know how painful foot problems can be. I have plantar fascitis (I know I had to have spelled that wrong) and some days I can barely walk. The only thing that helps is bextra or celebrex, but Advil and Aleve work pretty well too. Please go and get it checked to be on the safe side if you can afford it. You don't want to lose what ability you have with your foot.
Take Care,

Night Shade,
Contrary to popular belief, there is something that doctors can do for broken toes. I know in the old days the just let it go, but last year I broke 2 of mine on my left foot and didn't go to the doc because I've always heard they can't do anything for it. Alas, about 2 or 3 days later, a friend of mine who is a doctor looked at it and told me to go get x-rays and stuff. The podiatrist actually had to re-brake them both because I let it go too long and then set them properly before adding the cast. So I would definitely go get it checked out, just to be on the safe side.

I would definitely see a podiatrist about it. Unlike an orthopedic, a podiatrist will tape your foot in a way that will give a lot of support to it.

Man, we sure do have a lot of *clumsy* people on the board! Broken toes, messed up thumb, etc. I'm just teasin' you two. But, I hope you get it checked out soon and can get some help for it. My mom had a huge rock fall on the top of her foot and it swelled up like half a baseball. She never went to the doctor for it. Now, she has permanent damage and still gripes about it. She was afraid of doctors and tried to get us to be also. Keep us updated!
