Sending records to an OP...
      #120029 - 12/02/03 09:48 PM

If I send records to an OP, can they contact the physician that generated the records? If so, is this a typical practice or is this usually only done on an as needed basis?

Thanks in advance for any insight on this topic.

I have never seen or heard of it being done before. It would be illegal for your Dr to even answer any questions about if you had been there or not. My Dr would have a cow if he knew I used OPs!!

I specifically asked this question of the doctor during my consult. I asked him point blank if he was going to call the doctor listed in the records I faxed them. I told him I live in a small town and was worried about gossip, etc. (Which is only too true.) He told me "no, absolutely not." He said that it would not be necessary, since we had talked, and he was satisfied with everything. (What I told him matched the diagnosis in my records, etc.) I was very relieved to hear this, as my doctor would not only have a cow, I'm sure he would dismiss me as a patient, and possibly even turn me over to the police (for "double-dipping"/"doctor shopping", etc.), as I had to sign a pain management contract in order to even be treated!

Sad, isn't it that we have to be so deceptive just to get what we need to maintain some sort of functional life. It's just plain wrong (IMHO) that we chronic pain patients are forced into almost criminal behavior in order to get any relief at all. And, trust me, I DO feel guilty, and I'm constantly afraid that somehow I'll get "caught."

Anyway - I hope I've answered your question. PM me if you have any more - questions that is.

BTW - I used DoctorByPhone.com

Yeah I have also never heard of it happening.

The OP's need to have current medical records on file to establish and support the doctor-patient relationship, which is the basis for the legality of the prescriptions they write. They are not in the business of participating in your continuing medical treatment beyond writing scripts, so it's hard to imagine why an OP doctor would want to confer with the doc who diagnosed your disc problem or whatever.

It seems more obvious every day that we all need to have some kind of current medical records. The so called no-records places really are a dying breed.

Ha, mine too!!!!! Do you actually think the OP's have time to call Doctors???? Plus, with the new confidentiality laws, I don't think they can share information.
Unless your records are questionable, I can't see this ever happening. Never heard of anyone having their dr. called either. This is just to cover their A**. I always put my dr. name on my consult forms, thinking that this will prove to them I have nothing to hide, which I don't.
If you are uncomfortable with this, just put nothing at all, stating with no insurance, no current dr., or make one up.
