I can't believe that this is so easy, but apparently there are holes all over the electronic banking system. This is a Lengthy Dateline Article, so I will only post the link, and just say it is amazing the way crooks think!
And I feel guilty about my pain and meds!!!
Gee Whiz!
Pay special attention to the part about anything different appearing or looking on your ATM
I love green folding money more and more....
Also these crooks are ruthless enough to blackmail or do home invasions; I bet they were considering that down the line.....
It's the holidays, people! Be joyful, but extra careful in parking lots and everywhere else,ok?

This is incredible, prettyday! They should spent one percent of the time they spend harassing OP's and CP practitioners, and go after this ridiculous system and it's many loopholes. When I first heard about this I just could not believe it was even possible, that any moron (me included!) could go out and buy and ATM and set it up in a parking lot and harvest PINs and other protected financial data. It's like saying 'Line up if you want to start a Bank". Buy an ATM for Fun And Profit!!!! No Credit? No Worry!
When I first read about this a few weeks ago of course it was presented as a past problem, readers were assured that safeguards were in place. But it sounds like buying an ATM is about as easy as buying an assault weapon.
About 10 days ago I discovered that somebody assumed my identity on one of my Master Cards, one I don't use very much. They got the number and exp date, billing address etc. They set up a paypal account in my name, set up a website and registered with Visa and MC to collect payments! (No idea what goods or services they were planning on selling in my name). It was the internet registration company that smelled something fishy and questioned the charge (several hundred dollars for 8 years domain registration). The paypal account was up and running for a month, they never suspected a thing. Even though I maintain 2 paypal accounts, one of them with THE SAME CARD THAT WAS APPROPRIATED registered as the backup payment option. That's not supposed to be possible!
There are supposed to be safeguards! Yeah right.
Sometiimes I chuckle when someone posts 'Is it safe to pay the IOP with a credit card?" Most of the time the answer is yes, but lately Im thinking maybe we can't be too cautious. If it feels wrong it probably is.
It's strange you brought this to light yesterday. My Mom got a letter from her bank stating that her ATM card had been compromised recently at an ATM machine somewhere. The letter did not get specific. It said no fraudulant activity was indicated, but to be safe they were cancelleing her old card and sending her a new one. Very coincidental. Thank you.
