I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this - about a year ago, my doctor gave me a very low dose script of Elavil to help me sleep. Is this something that you take and it helps you fall asleep that night (like Valium or Xanax), or something you need to take for a month before it starts to help you sleep (like Buspar)?
Any feedback is always appreciated.
Thanks everyone. You all have been SO much help!

Good Morning-
One of the major side effects of amitriptyline is drowsiness. It does also have tricyclic antidepressant properties, but are not fully realized until 4-12 weeks.
Elavil is a great sleep aid, if you can titrate your dose so you are not a zombie the next morning! Best of luck----------------------eddie

Hi saraba, elavil is a tricyclic antidepressant that is often used for insomina as it is very sedating. It is like a benzo or a tranqualizer in that it works the first night you take it; you don't have to use it over a period of time for it to be effective. Be careful because it can be like a knockout drug! Try and figure out how long it is between taking it and when it hits you so that you are not doing something like driving while it happens. BTW, it can take a couple of days for it to really start to work for your, so don't get too disappointed if it doesnt work the first time you try it.

I've been prescribed Elavil (amitryptaline sp?) for sleep, and it gave me the WORST restless legs I've ever had. I mean to the point where I was considering making myself sick to get rid of any meds still in my stomach. It was awful.
When I did finally get to sleep (about 3 hours after initially taking it), I slept like a stone for about 11 hours and woke up confused and very out of it. I never took the stuff again. My doc prescribed me I believe 10mg, one tablet before bed, and that's just what I took.
I hope that your experience with it is better than mine was.

I've tried elavil as prophylaxis for migraine. I took 25 mg at bedtime for about 2 weeks before I stopped. It made me sleep (and actually it gave me crazy dreams almost every night), but I was just exhausted and completely out of it the entire next day. I just couldn't take it anymore, so I stopped taking the elavil.
