fibromyalgia new
      #118221 - 11/24/03 11:55 AM

Any suggestion on this topic. All 18 pressure points hurt. My rheum gave me morphine lolipops for really bad days, but if I use them, forget the day, it is wasted. I don't want to be like this. Can anyone give me any non-medicinal options. Thanks.

Hi, Moonzok~
I certainly can't guarantee the efficacy, but for a couple of years, I took SAM-e, 400 to 800 mg daily, with great relief of many of my FM symptoms (and I certainly have it BAD!). You also take one B-complex vitamin each day, in order for the SAM-e to metabolize properly.

Frankly, I've never found a prescription medication which will relieve the pain, burning, and aching of FM. . . short of general anesthesia or conscious sedation (and I highly recommend the latter, but that's just me!). Of course, no one will allow you to have Fentanyl and Versed to take on an ongoing basis, but it certainly would be nice.

I just had an appt. with my PM Dr. today and they are going to try nerve blocks on me (I also have fibro) Don't know if that's an option as I can't tell you if it works or not, but I'll post after I have it done.

Jordan,I hope they work for you, my husband had them for neck pain (sympathetic pain from his back and legs) and unfortunately they did nothing for him.

The best bets for FM flares/pain is lots of deep, restorative sleep and as little stress as possible. For more information, here are two sites: Dr. Devin Starlanyl's site, which is, quite possibly, the greatest source for information on FM. Her book is a lifesaver and can be found here: at Amazon and, finally, a page that I wrote in 1997 when first diagnosed with FM. http://www.geocities.com/~heart27/

Hope at least something here helps. I know how bad it can be. Good luck, and feel free to PM me if you need someone to chat with.

Thanks Ceebee, I hope so too. She told me that it will either work really well, or not at all, so we shall see. I know she did tell me I'll be asleep during the procedure so it must be pretty painful. Not looking forward to that too much.

Jordan~
Have you considered trying acupuncture? I do know of some FM patients who have benefitted from it, but it always depends upon the individual. Seems like what might work for one, doesn't work for others. . . or *anyone* else!

moonzok (& everyone else who suffers from fibromyalgia)~
I cannot imagine the pain that goes along with this wretched Better if kept off the board disease- my heart goes out to you all.

If you would like to try a natural, holistic way to deal with it, check out Healthwell.com. In the "search" box, type in "fibromyalgia"- there are several articles that relate to fibro; I hope you find a means to deal with your pain.
Best of luck & God's blessings,
Julz

Hey Lakjaw, my PM Dr. called yesterday and I will now spend the next 4 Mondays starting in Dec. getting the nerve blocks. So, that means nothing to eat or drink after midnight 4 Sunday nights in a row and that includes my pain meds too she said. Anyway, if this doesn't work, I will we willing to try anything (as long as my insurance will pay for it ) So, I'll keep the acupuncture in mind and thanks for the suggestion. I've also read that it's helped quite a few people.

Hi, Jordan~
Wishing you all the good luck in the world. I sincerely hope the injections help.

I'm currently waiting to hear from my doctor or his nurse or *someone* because I started bleeding internally again last night, and spent several hours on the loo. Crohn's has flared up, and the FM isn't far behind. *whine*whine*!

Can anyone explain how fibro is diagnosed? I looked at a list of the symptoms, and have to say they are so vague that a million different other problems could be the cause. How is it doctors decide it IS firbo and not something else?

My brother's girlfriend has this and I would like greater understanding of the disease.

Thanks in advance.

Basically, one is usually sent to a rheumatologist, and s/he might order blood work for rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. If both return negative, the doc then tests for the sore points. There are points which are fairly specific, and are bilateral. If you go to Google and look up a couple of the initial sites, they should have a body outline with the spots marked. I have far more sore points than are listed there.

Hi, Jordan~
'fraid I'm going to be sick on Thanksgiving, after all. No call back from the doctor, so it looks like I'll be going to the ER if things get worse. . . as usual.

Hope everyone has a lovely, relatively pain-free (at least!) Thanksgiving day.
