As I am new here, I am still getting acquainted with rather unique idiom and jargon. I have read posts/threads dealing with the concept of hydro holidays. My initial interpretation was a brief period of "complete" relief by taking higher levels of hydrocodone. To me, the concept of a holiday is to get away from pain. I have to confess that I have doubled up my dose for brief periods to give myself a holiday from pain. It has just dawned on me that when you all refer to hydro holidays you mean a brief period of intense discomfort in order to reduce the tolerance to opiates by not taking hydrocodone. {sigh} The more subtle realities of long-term pain management are just beginning to be revealed to me. I am trying to decide if the term "hydro holiday" is apt description of relief from the problems of an increase dependency, or gallows humor about enduring the pain for a while.

Holiday means to take a break from, so it is an apt description. Doubling up on your meds for a holiday is quite possibly not as good a thing as you belive. You become even more tolerant and find that you need more increases in order to have the same pain-free days you once had. Try the real hydro holiday and see for yourself.

Yes, that's the terminology of hydro holiday.
Unfortunately, opiates will create tolerance the more they're taken, and they never seem to work the way that they once did if you have had to take them for long term, chronic pain.
I've been taking them for about 2.5 years now, and they work NOTHING like they used to, and tolerance is indeed a terrible problem.

There is a brite side. The Holidays get easier. Just like the tolerance builts up the holidays get easier. Build a kit. In that kit put Soma, Temegsic, a light Benzo and Amodium AD. You may want Ultram/Tramadol and some Clonedine. Clonedine lowers your blood presure. You tend to get fidgity when on holiday. Start with small doses. Don't mix too much of the meds. Soon you will find what works for you. There are plenty of threads concerning this. Check them out.
Suggest doing every month for a few days. When you go back, cut your doses of hydro and see if that helps.
Everyone is diferent.

That's true.
I have Temgesic (bupe), Clonidine, Ultram (which doesn't ever work for me, as a matter of fact, I can't use it so it's a moot point unfortunately - body chemistry), Benzo's and Soma for my 'holiday's'. I guess I have to learn how long to make these holiday's last, and how much of the above meds to use.
I still haven't gotten it down, yet. I also try to implement hot baths, L-Tyrosine, B Vitamins (and a good multi), lots of rest, etc. Right now I'm thinking of going on one because the 10/500's I'm on are making me VERY nauseous. I've never experienced something like this before. I wish I could find a way to get by without meds.
