My Pain Management Doctor wants me to try the drug Kadian. I've done some research on the drug but would appreciate feedback from anyone that has been on it for severe chronic pain. Thank's for any information you might provide.

Hi I might be able to help, even though I have been on Avinza instead of Kadian.
They are different in that Kadian is a 12-hour release med. whereas Avinza is a 24-hour med.
Aside from that they are very similar drugs. Both are Morphine Sulfate. They provide a very steady release of the med into the bloodstream, and the med comes in little beads that dissolve in the human body over a 12 (or 24 for Avinza) hour time.
They can be very effective, as they initially release a little boost of Morphine into the bloodstream to get you started. Very effective med for most.
Some people do experience nausea and/or constipation on the drug. The nausea usually goes away if you stick it out for a few days; the constipation can (and should) be battled with laxatives. Unfortunately many people give up too soon due to the nausea, even though, again, it is only a temporary side-effect. Best of luck trying the drug, it is certainly worth a try!
Hope this helps,

I spent nearly 2 years on MSContin for cancer pain. I started at 60mgs 3X/day and ended at 100mgs/3X day (with Percocet for breakthrough pain). I found it to be very effective in the regard that I did not experience much euphoria, that it alters your perception to pain (just makes you not care even though you still feel it) and that I was able to pretty much function normally (but I did get the nods at the higher doses occasionally.)
The nausea will go away relatively soon, but lying down always made it go away when it happened. Constipation was a serious problem, but worth it when considering the pain. I used rectal glycerin suppositories for constipation, and your body doesn't "get used" to those as it does with medication laxatives. I also always took Senecot (prescribed by doctor) and used Metamucil. The problem with Metamucil is that you have to use it EVERY day or you get rebound constipation.
The negatives with morphine were that acute pain crises (or post-procedure pain) were not well controlled by taking more morphine. In fact, my morphine dose was increased probably only due to tolerance. I was taking about 3 oxycodones a day for breakthru pain on top of the morphine. Granted, I had to take many other drugs concurrently including Nupogen (sp?), dextromethasone, occasionally Valium, in conjunction with chemotherapy.
My experience may be totally different than someone elses who was not concurrently receiving chemotherapy.
I really don't know how Kadian differs from MSContin, but I would assume they are very similar.

Typically, in my experience anyways, they will give you Kadian (a time released drug)for long term treatment and then something else for breakthrough pain(immediate release). If this is the case, you should get adequate relief from the Kadian, which, as Redhill said, is a time release Morphine caspule. Although, if they don't give you something else for breakthrough pain, it is not unheard of to pop open a Kadian capsule and sprinkle the little pellets on top of applesauce or oatmeal and consume it like that. This isn't done to get an immediate buzz or anything like that, but moreso to get immediate relief (if necessary) from a delayed relief drug. Obviously, you should consult your doctor before attempting this, but this procedure has been recommended by several professionals in major medical journals that I've read. Best of luck.

I want to thank you all, Red...NightShade...Dasani, for sharing your knowledge about Kadian and similar meds. I also have been on meds similar to this one and experienced the same side effects that were mentioned.
Thank You All for taking the time to share information.
