MS Contin???
      #118246 - 11/24/03 01:47 PM

I just got back from the pain clinic and the Dr. told me I should be taking MS Contin for longer lasting pain relief. Does anyone know what this is? What is it compared to? Is it similar to Oxyccontin?

12-hour time-release morphine to be more specific.

Hi,
I was also put on MScontin(15mg2xday) for longerlasting pain relief,w/norco's for breakthru pain.At 1st,this medicine seemed like a GODSEND!But,within a matter of days, the pain was back, tho not*as* bad as it was(I'd say a 9 out of a 15).I hope it works well for you:)
Good luck!
Lisa

Started 30mg MS-Contin 2x per day 3 months ago. Took awhile to get used to them (they seemed a lot stronger then the 3 Norco a day I was taking) After a few weeks got used to them. Still prefer them to the Norco. Be careful though, because it is a CII medication you need to be up on your prescription refills with your DR (mine only works 4 days a week) so you need to be careful not to be left high and dry since they cannot be "called in" to the pharmacy. I have heard some say WD from morphine can be very bad but the 2 days I was on holiday were not as bad as a hydro holiday.
All in all I think im better of on MS-Contin then with Norco even though my DR does not believe in prescribing "break through meds"

That's interesting about it being 12 hour time-release. I always assumed it was 8 hour time release as I was taking it 3 times a day (60-100mgs every 8 hours) with Percocet for breakthrough pain. I found it, in combination with the oxycodone to be very effective pain control.
