Has anyone experienced or know anything about Hydrocodone & water retention? Also, along with this, frequent urination at night?

Frequent night-time urination yes, but I believe its caused by urinary retention (side effect of hydro) so I must go more often in an attempt to fully empty my bladder.
Too much info? LOL, sorry

No, not too much info at all- in fact, you absolutely answered my question. OK so, Urinary retention (water retention) IS a side effect of Hydro, thus the frequent trips to the bathroom at night(annoying isnt it?)
Thanx for your input!
Peace,

Yea, I have the same side effect. Except I simply don't have to go to the bathroom at all for like 24 hrs. when I take more than 3 a day.
EXTREME urinary retention!

I'm not sure. I started having to get up and go to the bathroom more often during the night because I am always so thirsty and at 39, it's all just going on strike down there.

I have this also and what is even worse - when you really have to go but it doesn't want to come out - very annoying sensation. I think it was Quincy, bless her heart, that said she fell asleep on the potty one night trying to go.

Ah yes, the joys of hydro/oxy water retention. What bugs me the most is whenever I begin a taper of any sort I have to plan on being home for the next 24 hours because my bladder fills every 20 minutes! And I'm not talking about withdrawal and the need to be near the toilet for that other reason. It's entirely a matter of reversing the water retention and it is ANNOYING!

Ha, ha! Fell asleep on the potty! Oh, that's great. I know I've dozed for a few minutes before, but never fully fell asleep. The things we go through, I swear.

Wow! I am so glad Julz started this thread. I am a lot older than you, prettyday, and I was SURE it was my old age and that I would be buying Depends pretty soon. I have even been going to the Doc for what I thought were UTI's but the culture is always negative! One thing that has helped with this problem is to cut out the diet sodas and substitute water for them.
Aren't we a mess?!

What has helped me with this problem is I drink a LOT of water. "They" say you're supposed to drink 8 big glasses of water a day (which I can barely do) but at least trying to get that much water down helps a bunch. Plus, I think it helps keep that liver flushed which is important!
Just my two cents!

Count me in, too! I think I heard one of those prescription drug commercials on TV (you know the ones that don't tell you what the drug is FOR, but think you will go to your doctor and say "is this for me?") say, "tell your doctor if you are urinating more than 8 times a day..."
Oh, the joys if ONLY I was limited to 8 times day!!!
It's like having a UTI without the burning or pain!!!

EXACTLY!!!
I've read that most people cannot go, as some have posted; myself and some others have the exact opposite effect- can't stop going~
Is there anything we can do to help this problem? I have trouble sleeping at night as it is-many times I find myself FINALLY drifting off, only to have to get up to go again!
Sometimes I even have to go RIGHT AFTER I GO!!!

Julz-
For some reason my greatest problem with this is at night. I carefully watch my fluid intake after dinner to avoid getting woke up several times at night to use the restroom, but it generally makes no difference.
Anyone ever tried the "gotta go gotta go gotta go right now, gotta go gotta go gotta go" medication? Sorry- I can only recall the jingle from the commercial, not the drug name.

I have this too. Eating fruit and drinking lots of water seems to help. For whatever reason (sorry boys, if you are even on this thread) during my period it's easier to urinate. Don't know what to make of that one.
Basically keeping a good diet and drinking lots of water helps. Thanks for starting the thread!

Thank you very much, night_shade! Now I've got that jingle stuck in my head, where it will stay for the rest of the day. Ha, ha! No, can't say I recall the medication you're talking about either. Dang jingle!

Hi everyone,
I have this situation also. What helps me is making sure I am hydrated, lots of water, and also keeping something in my stomach...always. I also chew lots of gum..seems to help..then i'm only having to P every half hour. A lot huh~
What's odd is I have no warning..I have to go RIGHT NOW..ya know? From not having to to having to really bad
p.s. i take 2-3 hydro ES a day~

I know, that gotta go song does not help the situation. And whenever I get really stressed or have to go, I start humming
"The Bunny Hop Song"
for hours
it is terrifying

As for me, that song from "Grease"- you all know the one...
"I got chills, they're multiplying, & I'm losing control..." all the way to the echo of "It's electrifying, it's electrifying..."
MAN OH MAN

The herbal supplement dandelion acts as a diuretic and may help . . . Also goldenrod. This is better than any OTC weight loss, water pill. Anecdotal data also suggests dandelion helps liver function & health. I have read this in several herbal references.

Gee Nightshade, thanks SO much for sticking that jingle in my head too! BTW, the name of the med is....drumroll, please....Detrol LA!
On a more serious note, I agree with the poster who said she wanted to see her doctor about possibly getting Detrol LA...I had thought about it too but as I knew that the symptoms were caused by hydro, I'd just be told to stop the hydro usage.
Julz, I think Nightshade has one of the best ideas for reducing the nighttime "gotta-gos" - seriously reducing or eliminating liquid intake after dinnertime. I know that would be difficult (I'm a liquidholic) but worth it.
For Drew64 - I know exactly what you mean about no warning before having to go, RIGHT NOW. I thought it was just a sign of aging (I'm 32) but I used to be able to drive from my home to Atlantic City (3.5 hours) with no pitstops but no more.

Dandelion- sounds good to me- I will most definitely check it out, thank you.
Personally, it doesnt matter if I drink no water all day or a gallon of it- I still have to go like there's no tomorrow at night!
As for the rest of us, keep jingling while we're tinkling.
(That was corny, I know, couldn't help it.)
Peace,

Sorry Lemongrass!!! The song jingle was the only way I could identify DETROL LA (THANKS A MILLION Lovepink!!!) But it is my just reward to also be suffering the same fate--gotta go gotta go gotta go right now--- repeating itself in my head!!!
Also, girls, it should be said that if you experience frequent urination, UTI and diabetes should be ruled out. Just in case!
I also want to clarify that I don't take hydro regularly (but I was just on it for 2 weeks for dental pain) but I do take methadone, have taken oxy and morphine and Demerol too. Had the same problem on all these meds--especially the morphine with urinary retention at day, couldn't stop "going" at night!
Oh, the joys of medication side-effects!!!

SkyQueen, are you talking about that horrendous feeling of feeling like you have to go all the time, but in reality only tiny amounts come out? I can't describe it better except to say it is a very unpleasant "sensation". It's enough to drive a person crazy! With me nothing at all works, not warm baths or anything until it feels like going away. Also I don't know what brings it on.

Just another voice to add to the choir. I actually did HOURS of research on this, but could only find info on urinating LESS frequently. This drove me insane as I got up 16 times to pee. It seems to come and go for me. And I don't understand the retention/having to go all night thing. I just have to go all the time.
And my ankles used to be so pretty...sigh.

Aw, that's all right, night_shade, it was going to happen anyway.
See, my oldest daughter got up this morning to see me in clean happy mode. I took her to work and when I picked her up, she said, "Are you still in that gotta go, gotta go, gotta go right now" mood? I laughed so hard I nearly wet myself!
The men reading this thread must be having a field day with this one!
