I Am so depressed and I Don't know what is causing it. I Am living with a Brain stem glioma and have been on vicodin for about eight months.Recently I have ben terribly depressed and I was wondering if it could be the medication. I take vicodin and Lortab. This is a real emergency and you all have been a great support in the past although this is my first post but I read your suggestions often. Please respond and if you would like to Privately help me through your experience that would be greatly appreciated. You can write me at
and my name is Tina.
Thankx for listening

Livingeasy -- Lortab and vicodin are the same thing just with different names. Perhaps you should talk to your doc about your depression. There are some really great anti-depressents out now. Have you thought about therapy? Being in chronic pain does make a person become more apt to depression. It is exhausting to never feel well.
Take care of yourself.

Having experienced the same feelings for many years, I finally sought psych help and was diagnosed with major depression. After trying many, many antidepressants, I was finally put on Effexor XR and it literally changed my life. The only drawback I have found is that if you do not taper off this med without guidance of a physician, the side effects are horrendous. But, I decided this was worth the good results I got and I felt the difference in like 3-4 days, not the 4-6 weeks that most other meds take. And, it is a once a day med. I have resigned myself to the fact that I may have to take this med forever. There is a long, long history of depression in my family and two other family members of mine are on the same med and it has worked wonders for them as well.
I hope this helps and there are many of us out here that can empathize. I would highly recommend going to see a qualified professional to diagnose your depression. Remember, depression is a chemical imbalance of neurotransmitters in your brain and not just a figment of your imagination. Don't let anyone tell you that your feelings aren't real or don't exist.
Peace and grace,

I take Lexapro myself (and Ritalin) but I have found that hydro has been a wonderful anti-depressant for me! What a great side effect from my chronic pain relief! I have to remember not to be so dependent on the energy and "supermom" f/x that I get from the hydro pain med.

Hi Tina - wow, you have alot on your plate...depression almost seems inevitable. I don't really want to offer any suggestions (other than most definitely speak to your neurologist, neuro-surgeon, or oncologist about it) without knowing what sort/location of glioma it is.
I do wish you the very best.

Dear Livingeazy,
there are so many causes and cures one could take a lifetime to try them all....If you could do a search on Google on "Cognitive Therapy", you may find this is a immediate and to the point therapy that helps your other methods work more effectively.
I wish you all the luck and good chemicals you are capable of making---this is from someone with first episode at age 4 and now I am almost 40, so I still work on it, and it has gotten immensely better; but when I get a pain surge, I slide back into tears and despair, too.
We don't know the secret, yet. But maybe someone will find it tomorrow.
Keep hoping.
