intrepid,

I'm not sure about the pharmacology of it, but I know of a few people with a very high tolerance that tried to take tramadol and it sent them into immediate withdrawal. In other words, there's only anecdotal evidence.
Sorry I don't have any links to post, though its worth noting that on the insert it says to not mix with opiates and not to use tramadol when quitting opiates. Maybe its due to the fact that it sends some into w/d?

That may be true but I couldn't have quit without the ultram. The best part was I didn't suffer the depression that usually follows quitting. So I guess everyone is different but for me it was a life saver.

It's possible that tramadol is a partial antagonist, such that it doesn't completely block the receptors like a pure antagonist like naltrexone (IIRC). If that's the case, that would explain why someone with a high intake/tolerance of opiates or opioids would get spun when they took tramadol too soon, while a person with a lesser tolerance would probably not have nearly as strong a reaction, or none at all if their receptors were not as saturated. I'm sure a google search would give more info than most of us have time to read & digest..

I usually take around 240mg's of oxy per day, and tramadol has yet to be anything but a potentiator in my case.

That is interesting reading about not mixing ultram with other opiates. I once had a doc prescribe me both, so 6 a day, 3 of the ultram, 3 of the vics. I had no problem. but did find out withdrawals from the ultrams are shear hell compared to the vic withdrawl. Xanax, lots of sleep and B vitamins got me through it though.
