Taking Prednisone - CANT SLEEP - HELP!!!!!!
      #113001 - 11/04/03 05:16 PM

My Neuro has me on a treatment of Prednisone 10mg to get rid of this Migraine that I have had since LAST MONDAY !!!!
I am out of Stadol NS and in PAIN PAIN!! To top that I have not slept in days, I called Neuro yesterday & reported this to him & he said he would call in another script for the Stadol NS. Well my lovely HMO insurance denied the script saying it was too soon since I was in the ER last Tues & got a script filled last Weds w/directions 1 spray every 4 hrs for pain. To try to sleep, I bought some Tylenol PM figuring that would help a little with the pain & put me to sleep, NOPE!! I have been up for over 2 days and don't know what to do. My Neuro goes out of town on Thurs, so if I'm gonna call him I have to do it tomorrow (Weds). If you have any suggestions on what I should tell him, Please Please let me know! Thanks so much. Sorry so long, I have been to you know where and back since this started last Monday!

Purple,

I feel for you. I've never talked to you. I I usually post on the VIP board (same name - fieldgoal). As I said - I feel for you. My nine year-old daughter has been on doses of up to 15omg a day of prednisone for her severe eczema skin condition and I get terrible migraines. However, on any dose of prednisone, she has a lot of difficulty sleeping.

BTW - Can you pay cash for the Stadol NS?

The only thing that comes to mind is sleep medications. Some of the more potent sleep meds are:
Ambien, Halcion, Trazodone, Temazepam, Ativan (someitmes used for sleep). There's a few more that I can't think of right now.

If you have never used Ambien before, I reecommend that you go to the doctor right now and ask for it. I've taken it, my wife and my daughter have taken it also. You may want to ask for 2 different types in case one doesn't work - it will save you a trip back to the dr.

A usual dose of Ambien is 10mg. Never take more than prescribed - it's serious stuff.

As I said, call or go to your dr. ASAP and ask for Ambien (You're not allergic to it, are you?)

How about the triptan migraine meds? (zomig, imitrex, frova, maxalt) These may help if you haven't tried them already.

Check and see if you could just pay for the Stadol!!

Chuck

Purple,
I am so sorry that you have to go through this!! I know exactly where you are coming from as I have had CDM(Chronic Daily Migraines) for about 8 1/2yrs now and they are something I would never wish on anyone!! I am allergic to all of the "triptin" meds like Imitrex and I have seen numerous neurologists and we have found nothing but pain meds to help my migraines. It stinks though because doctors DO NOT like to treat migraines or headaches with narcotic pain meds due to rebound headaches(which I do not believe in!!) so I usually get stuck between a rock and a hard place!! But if mine get to bad I go to the hospital and they "usually" will give me my shot of 2mg Dilaudid 75mg Vistoril which is the only thing that has helped me for the past 4yrs when the migraine gets out of control. I took Stadol NS and also had the injections for the first 4yrs of my migraines but I found it would just make it better for a little while and after the meds wore off it came back just as bad if not worse!! So that is why I switched to the dilaudid for bad ones! I find that if I get the shot and then come home and sleep the next morning it is much much better!! So any ways I know this isn't much help but if you ever want to talk feel free to PM me as I know the pain you are suffering all to well!!

Kelly

Hi Kelly,
Thanks for the reply we are in the same boat. I am still waiting for the Neuro to call me back. I called at 9am and it is 12:15pm, he is going out of town tomorrow. I bet he's not gonna call anything in for me so I don't know why I am even bothering! I am gonna try to take a nap before I have to pick my girls up from school, I doubt I will sleep because this stupid prednisone has me all hyped up and I am out of my mind right now!! We will definately talk more because we sound exactly alike! Have a pain free day, if not for you try for me!

Have him call in a script for Ambien or Sonata - both great sleeping meds. They are the "Hypnotic variety" that get you to doze off and work for 5-7 hours and you wake up refreshed and not groggy like with OTC sleeping pills. I take Sonata 10mg and it does the trick whenever I need it.

Alternatively, you can get tranquilizers like Xanax which will put you to sleep, but leave you groggy in the morning and the doctor may not be able to call in a script in some states.

Finally, if you can't get anything in time from the doctor, nothing OTC works, and there aren't mixing problems with other meds you take, have a few drinks to help "knock you out" and get to sleep.

Hey Purple:

Am so sorry to hear about this.

Having asthma all of my life, have had to take prednisone off and on. It is indeed a stimulant, so to speak. (although it is natural - hormone). I once had a pharmacist tell me he became "addicted" to pred due to it's stimulant like effects. What a dangerous addiction!!!

When asthma was VERY bad, I had to increase to an extremely large dose. I remember staying up all night wrapping Christmas presents. It was just like SPEED!!

Sorry I don't have any suggestions for sleep - maybe east a lot of sweet carbos before going o bed (I suggest Little Debbie Swiss Cake Rolls ) - those always do the trick for me.

Purps - let us know how it goes. Does he plan tapering you off the pred?

Purple I know it sucks!!! to have these issues and prednisone (sp) sucks too!! although it does work wonders on certain situations. My wife has Lupus and had to take it and she found that klonopin helped calm her down or xanax. Even though I don't recommend mixing too many meds especially without talking to your dr, this is just some friendly advise so you can get some sleep and fight off that pain!
Hope this helps...

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for replying- GET THIS!! I called the Neuro at 9:15am this morning & it is now 5:59pm & no call back!! so I called Walgreen's today & asked if I could self pay for the Stadol that the idiot HMO wouldn't & they said yes, so I forked out 81.69 & ran I picked it up, hubby was here & no doc call. I feel better pain wise with the one spray, but don't know about sleeping tonight all I have is Tylenol PM. Neuro is out of town tomorrow & I won't see him until Monday. This really sucks. And people wonder why we turn to OP's for help, my own hubby said these same words before leaving for work...

Hi Purple,

Your posts are a riot, but I really do feel sorry for you. I think neuros are worthless. I've been to a few and they all seem to be from another planet. I don't have any personal experience with prednisone, but my dog was on it and he was miserable, too.

Try the ambien, as everyone else has recommended. It's a lifesaver. It'll knock you out quickly and you won't have a 'hangover' in the morning. Just make sure you are REALLY ready to go to sleep when you take it. It works quickly.

Hang in there, kiddo.

Neuro's are the WORST with regard to "bedside" manner and generally have the worst "God SYndrom" of all specialists! Prednisone does stimulate the fight or flight response...hence, your brain is ready to run the NY marathon while your dead tired! And I'd ask for something other than ambien...I've taken it after being up for 40 hours & it didn't do a THING for me....if you have to use OTC stuff, get name brand dramamine (NOT the non-drowsy formula, they now make both) You can safely take that & 100 mg benedryl and that might actually help...If the doc is willing to prescribe a sleep med, I'd go with ristoril or plain or valium....I don't think the ambien will work, particularly in contention w/the steroid. Good luck

Hi Purple I just read your post and wanted to say I hope your migraine is feeling better with the Stadol NS! I feel your pain and I hope that the jerk of a Neurologist pulls his head out of his rear end soon so you may be treated like a human being not some animal!! Please PM me if you need to chat with someone who knows your pain!!

Wishing pain-free days ahead,
Kelly

Well the idiot Neuro never did call me yesterday. His nurse called me at 3pm today, I was like "yeah?" she said how are you doing? I couldn't believe it! To make a long story short she said he left instructions for her to call in a script for Fioricet Tablets & some other pills which I forgot the brand name but the generic is Hydroxyzine Pamoate 25mg. I only know that because I checked Walgreen's website to see what she called in & if it was ready to be picked up & it's not & I'm not going out tonight to get it, so it will have to wait until the morning. I asked her about something for sleep and she said No, that was all he left for her to call in for me. So another night of not sleeping! I did start the tapering of the prednisone today so I should start being able to sleep again soon. I can't wait for this nightmare to end and I still have this migraine even though I have the Stadol but that's not gonna last forever. Thanks for all your support, I really do appreciate it especially when I am ready to rip someone's head off (the Neuro)

Purple: Personally, I'd stop taking the prednisone. I've taken it before, same problem went three days with maybe an hour of sleep. Horrible stuff. I felt like I had drank six cups of coffee all day, all jittery and energetic. If you can get the shot of imitrex or the big relpax pill, are the strongest two triptans I've tried. The pills or nosespray of imitrex is too weak. I often have to even use two shots. But the big relpax works even better these days! Too bad my insurance no cova
