Refer to the DEA's own "study" of deaths associated with Oxycontin, specifically.
http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drugs_concern/oxycodone/oxycontin7.htm
Please read the entire article before posting!
According to the article, the DEA requested autopsy reports from medical examiners nationwide that may be associated specifically with single-entity oxycodone (Oxycontin) products.
According to the DEA, some "7,185,000 prescriptions of these single-entity oxycodone products sold in 2000, approximately 5.8 million were for OxyContin®" specifically...the study goes on to say that of the reports received, there were 464 confirmed deaths due to Oxycontin--but it doesn't say whether or not the people who died had a prescription or not. The study was based on time-of-death toxicology reports only, and many people were poly-drug users. It would be safe to assume this report included both people with prescriptions and those who received this drug illicitly.
Do the math...of 7,185,000 prescriptions for this drug, 464 deaths resulted. That's .00645%....do we see a little hype going on here???

They made ALOT of assumptions in this report! And they used interesting wording in categorizing other primary causes of death, such as GSW, as being "intoxicated" on oxycontin at the time of death....so lets see, Bob, who's 45 and had pancreatic cancer, looking forward to maybe 2 months of life left in excruciating pain, growing progressively more disabled and dying an undignified death, decided that today, while he was reltaively comfortable (thanks to the oxycontin), would take control over his destiny, which was to die anyway, chose to blow his brains out & end it quickly, did so because he was "intoxicated on Oxycontin"...I've been on oxycontin for nearly 2 years, and I can tell you I've NEVER been "intoxicated" on oxycontin....these guys are SICK, and for all you conservatives out there, MR. Bush is DIRECTLY responsible for the current climate we find ourselves in vis a vie the DEA and MR ASScroft...hand picked by MR. BUsh....so go ahead ya'll re-elect him....hope you all have good PM docs..cuz if MR. Bush & Mr. Asscroft have their way, you won't be able to buy from OP's anymore...

The majority of the deaths are because of a combonation of drugs, and don't forget they can't tell if the person used oxycontin, percocet, roxicodone, oxyfast, or any other substance that contained oxycodone. This information is BS, I bet less than 100 of those deaths were from oxycodone alone and god only knows how many of them were suicide. If someone takes an OC and died 2 days later from alcohol poisoning, oxycodone still comes up in their urine and would be listed as a cause of death. This information has too many holes to draw anything from it, though what do you expect from the DEA.

Never! I fully agree, and have noticed how the war on medicine has grown out of control in the past two years. I saw my primary doc go from reasonable to hysterical in that time (I used to take 15 mg of oxy at a time, but more recently he thought I should make do with 5 mg vicodins).
I am so confused about one thing. I thought the right-wingers wanted government out of our lives, but apparently they want government in the bedroom and the medicine cabinet. I could go on, being the bleeding heart liberal/green that I am, but it's probably wise that I don't.
