I have been on oxycodone(endocet 10/650) for about 5 months due to car accident and severe back pain. I know Oxycodone is very addictive and I want to try hydrocodone instead. My only fear is that the hydro will make me drowsey, as where the oxycodone makes me very awake and alert. I cannot be on a painkiller that is going to make me sleepy and in a daze. In anyone's opinion, since the oxycodone makes me alert, will the hydro have the same effect or will it make me drowsey? I'm just asking opinions from pain sufferers who have used both medications. Any help would be great!!!

Hi I had to reply to your post because I also wondered the same thing when switching to Hydro! But in my opinion if anything made me more sleepy it was the Oxy! I can't even take my Hydro(Norco) at night if I want to sleep because I won't be able to!! So hopefully this helps! Are you taking them now? I will post a link to a narcotic converter so you can see what the dosing should be when you switch so you don't go through any withdrawl symtoms!! Hope this helps you!!

I always have more trouble sleeping when I take percs. Sometimes they do seem "speedy"
The only time hydro makes me drowsy is when I up my dose. normal dosages seem to let me function fairly well.
Personally I like hydro better then oxy to me it feels "cleaner" and I have less negative side effects.

I have the same reaction: Hydro makes me wired and oxycodone gives me a nod. The thing with hydro, though, is if I take it before bed and can't sleep I don't get upset about it like I do when I have "regular" insomnia.

I believe how you react is a personalized thing regarding each med.
But hydrocodone is quite addictive on it's own.
I think that quality is under-rated by many.

i agree with the previous posts that cite individual reactions...having said that, and having used both meds --they both 'perc' Me up -- i would Guess that if one gives you an 'up' the other would too.

I'm with most of you- both hydro and percs make me sorta alert and often times I don't sleep on it- just lie there in a crazed daze I talked to my doc. about it and he said in rare instances, it does effect people that way and I'm one of those rare instances, Lol.

I agree with dagger eyez, the addiction potential of hydrocodone is WAY UNDERESTIMATED. In my opinion, I think hydrocodone is MORE addictive than oxycodone. Hydro is just so readily available that oxy is sort of a forbidden fruit.
I personally have to be careful about how late I take hydro otherwise I will find myself in bed for over an hour trying to sleep.

I've found oxy 10/650 to cause me to be drowsy (Even after taking it periodically for many months).
Hydro 10/650 used to keep me up online until 3am and kept my mind racing when I switched to it from oxy 10/650 as you are going to do. Now, however, (after several months) hydro 10/650 pretty much makes me drowsy after taking it as well. In fact, I make it a point to take it 20 mins before bed time so I can go to sleep faster!
Hope this helps since my situation seems pretty much the same as yours. Of course as a few people pointed out, situations may be identical, but our reactions are individual.

Here is my chance to ask a question I have been meaning to ask forever:
How much Hydro is equivalent to how much Oxy? (What's the conversion ratio?)

Blackcat (I have a black cat, too!!!)
Here are a couple good narcotic equivalency calculators.
http://www.globalrph.com/narcoticonv.htm
http://www.medcalc.com/narcotics.html
Technically, the ratio is about 1:1.5 for oxycodone to hydrocodone. I.e., 5mgs oxy to 7.5 mgs of hydro.
Hope this helps!

They are very similar in action and reaction. They have very similar molecules. People often seem to exhibit PLACEBO EFFECT between these two drugs. I would bet money that most wouldn't pass the "pepsi challenge" with these two medications (in comparible dosing)
OXYcodone is somewhat stronger but not by all that much.
The real difference?
Hydrocodone has a hydrogen base molecule, and Oxycodone has an oxygen base molecule.
They are so similar I wouldn't concern MYSELF with switching unless you NEED to (isn't helping, lets say) but with that, I'd just ask for a higher dose.. but it doesn't appear you need to. It sounds like you are doing fine. (don't fix what isn't broke comes to mind .)
This isn't comparing apples and oranges, it's comparing a "Granny Smith" to a "Gala" apple. different but still an apple.
JMO, take it or leave it.

Someone out there believes oxycodone is stronger or needs more regulation because I need a special form for percocet and also can't get refills, but for anything hydrocodone-related I can get it on a normal script form with up to 5 refills in my state.
Where do I sign up for that "Pepsi challenge" you mentioned?

I think my post came out far more argumentative than I meant it.
Oxycodone now has an ugly stigma because of OxyContin abuse. It sucks! Oxycodone its self (not talking OxyContin, which is just time release Oxycodone) IS a little stronger (I forget the ratio, I thought it was 2:3 but don't quote me) and seems to statistically carry more abuse potential prescription for prescription. Not sure why. I think there are far more HYDRO prescriptions out there so it's abused more from that standpoint, but Oxy its self is more abused. .... man I am making less and less sense by the moment, that Martini didn't benefit this conversation at all, DANG! I am quitting here, my apologies

Oxy and Hydro are very chemically similar, one O is the difference, and to me they feel the same also, except oxy is perhapes 20% more potent. try Ultram for your pain and it tends to be more stimulating
