info on ulcers
      #112308 - 11/01/03 01:31 PM

Hi everybody
Was wonderin if anyone has one or knows much about ulcers. I do have a stomach of iron, or at least I thought I did. Prior to me being on pain meds, I usually took a ton of tylenol, advil, stuff like that. Before the probs I have now I had a terrible time with my teeth and just could not afford to go to the dentist until I HAD to go. Anyway, this started last week. It is like when you stomach is empty and growls it is terrible painful. My stomach as also been a bit quesy, my son take prevacid so I decided to try some of those and they have seemed to help. It is most painful when my stomach is empty though. Having hunger pangs has never bothered me before this, I am just wondering if I have finally eaten a hole in my stomach, between the pills and the pepsi. That is another thing, pepsi stills tastes wonderful but seems to bother my stomach also. Could this be trouble?

I'd also be interested to hear any info on ulcers. Lately, my stomach feels like someone is wringing and twisting it all around. Not a nauseus feeling, but actual pain. Usually happens early evening, and is gone the next morning. I was thinking maybe it was an ulcer. God knows I have enough stress.

Here is a post Plotinus made on the subject:

Info on PPC for stomach upset:

Here is the blurb from LEF product description. They have also published several articles on the subject in their magazine. The articles generally cite the original research.

"GastroPro
900 mg • 60 capsules

Item Catalog Number: 499

Approved for the treatment of chronic liver diseases in many European countries, PPC (polyenylphosphatidylcholine) is a soy extract that is listed in the Physician’s Desk Reference of the United States. An accumulating body of research suggests that PPC’s umbrella of protection may extend from the liver to the stomach, pancreas and cardiovascular system. There are no known contraindications, side effects or interactions with other drugs.

GastroPro contains pure polyenylphosphatidylcholine. Those who should seek to immediately add GastroPro to their supplement program include those with:
Hepatitis C (but not those with hepatitis B)
Liver cirrhosis or impaired liver function due to aging
Pancreatitis
NSAID-induced gastritis and ulceration

Each bottle provides 60 capsules of 98% pure PPC, a percentage that is identical to the European pharmaceutical standards set for this product. And GastroPro is available for a fraction of the price that PPC sells for in Europe as a “drug.”

Other ingredients: gelatin, sorbitol, glycerin, purified water, and propylene glycol.

Dosage and use
Suggested dose: two 900-mg capsules a day. "

But if the meds aren't causing the problem, it could be a bacteria called h. pylori. Your doc can test for that, and give you an antibiotic to get rid of it.

Keep an eye on the color of your stool too. If it is blackish, you may have some bleeding going on in your stomach. Be sure to not let this problem go untreated because it can be dangerous.

It can be dangerous.
You can actually have a hole in your gut and hemorrage to death.

But that is extreme.

My point is to see a doctor and get a diagnosis.

Where is the pain located? Is it worse on a empty stomach? As the day progress does it worsen? It could be a variety of things. Your best bet is to see a Gastroenterologist.

Another thing you can get from Narcotics is Gallbladder disease.

When I had 4 ulcers, I had a pain right in between my boobs and a little lower. It would hurt like h3ll when I got hungry, then worse when I ate and then finally about 20 minutes later felt better. That is, until I got hungry again. Ugh. I was tested for the bacterial kind and they finally did a scope. I was hospitalized for vomitting and getting dehydrated in less than 8 hours. At first then did a bunch of tests on my pancreas and gallbladder, since I had pancreatitis in the past. Finally, a gastro guy came in and did a scope. Four of those suckers. No wonder it was so bad!

I do remember years and years ago (1980's), Pepcid was $2 a pill and was the cutting edge for ulcers. Now, it's nexium, I think. I'm on Aciphex and Zantac every day. Insurance decided on those two (another ugh).

Please don't let it go too long, lord knows I did and it got worse and worse until I was in the hospital for a while and couldn't hold down food either. The treatment is not complicated and the blood test quick and easy.

If you happen to have to have the scope, it's not bad. My checkup one was day surgery and they did "awake sedation". I have no clue what they gave me, but I was out of it. I didn't have the lasting effects of general anesthesia either.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. Good luck!

Yes. It is worse when I am hungry. that is what I had said. It is like my hunger pangs are magnified by a gazillion. And hungar pangs never bothered me before. I have taken the prevacid for 3 days now and do notice a difference, like my stomach is growling now, but it is not as painful as it was a few days ago. Is not the treatment that a doctor would give anyway??? I also have had a bit of a quesy feeling. The pain at first was up kind of high and I thought it was maybe just really bad indigestion. Also, it does feel better about 15-20 minutes after I eat something. Between the meds and I do have a ton of stress but no one would know it, I am a very good pretender. Geez, I need this like I need a hole in the head. I reckon, I better have myself looked at. THank you all so much for replying to this

You might want to see your doc and have an endoscopy performed. You may have H. Pylori which they can get rid of with flagyl (metronidazole). You may also have something more serious like Colitis, Chrons or GERD. There are several different reasons why you might get ulcers, some more serious than others. If in doubt, check with a GI doc (or at least your GP).

Go see your doc....he'll/she'll get a (hopefully) comprehensive history, profile of symptoms...do some BASIC testing first....and go from there...this really isn't something to try to self diagnose & treat....OKAY?
Let us know what you find out
