Opinions on encryption software?
      #108908 - 10/20/03 11:09 PM

There are a lot of programs that are supposed to either encrypt your hard drive where no one can decifer what is on your computer. There are also programs like historykill.com which is supposed to erase all internet activity. I have tried this programs and it has a free 15 day trail download with some sneaky aspects if they actually work.

Do these programs really work if your computer was seized so any activities remain private? Or is there simple technology to by pass these types of programs?

Because of my occupation I have first hand experience with your question but in reversed.

If somehow one of are employees accidentally looses there hard drive due to mechanical failure, software corruption, or even intentional formatting (that happened once). We can choose to send the hard drive out to a company that specializes in data recovery (the FBI has there own labs for this purpose, sometimes that’s how they catch pedophiles)

For $1700 they will attempt to piece together as much info as possible from the damaged hard drive, but they can’t guarantee results and most of the time the recovered data is in incomplete files.

There are ways to definitely make it difficult for recovery but your internet activity would probably be available from your ISP
