People vs. Western Union Financial Services, Inc, Orlandi Valuta, Orlandi Valuta Nacional, and Tex Mex. I received this letter and apparantly the defendants violated federal and state law by making misrepresentations regarding the exchange rate. Anyone who has used Western Union to send funds to a long list of countries over the past three years is entitled to a settlement coupon for $4.00 to be applied toward the transfer fee of an international money transfer. If you decided to participate, the Class and the Defendants may have full access to your private information i.e. financial status, ID info, transaction info (bank acct info, such as debit activity [who you've sent $ to etc ] etc. I am certain that I am not the only person who has used Western Union and Westernunion.com for international money transfers, and am REALLY hoping that others received this letter. Has me a bit frightened so, I sent two certified letters yesterday (one to each party) to "opt out," as this could be some sort of trap, and quite frankly $4 won't make or break me. Court date is 4/9/04 and the website given for more info is, www.hagens-berman.com/westernunion and www.cruzlitigation.com FYI: No clue who Orland Valuta or Tex Mex is. Just thought I'd share. Take care all and please let me know if I've been singled out

I received that notice in the mail several weeks ago. Looks like they are sending it out to everyone who has used WU? I've never ever used WU for an IOP,so this makes me think it's just a list of citizens whom have used their service. The reason I think this is,I have not sent money to foreign countries, just my kiddos here in the States,so I am not a member of this suit, but I did receive the notice.
After reading it thoroughly,I didn't see any mention of the settlement needing any private info, but I did not contact the Attorneys listed on the notice.
WU made a lot of money off folks who used their services to other Countries. They kept the difference in exchange rates for themselves, nor did they give this info to the customer(s) hence the class action lawsuit.
I agree WU owes some sort of restitution.

Well that's a load off...thank you Jere! On the last page it stated: "Western Union may disclose your personal information to third parties as explained in Western Union's Privacy Statements. The information disclosed may include financial background........recipients may include.......Government Agencies....." Those words, Goverment Agencies is what really turned me off. Anywho, thank you for the post!

Wow, I think by the time I got to the back page my eyes were crossed. LOL! There was a LOT to read, most of it legal jargon anyway.
That would make sense I suppose,in order to 'prove' your transaction was overseas in order for you to be considered a plaintiff. Oh well, not me.
I wonder how many other members received this. It didn't come official, just in a black/white envelope,no "Legal Info" enclosed,etc...Had I not seen WU,I would have trashed it without reading which I trashed it anyway.
Also got a class action regarding Blockbuster Video Rentals where someone filed about their outrageous late charges.(the same as renting a movie new,$4.23). Was glad to see that,I'll get a coupon for 2 free movies.
Glad I could be of service.
