      #108702 - 10/20/03 11:48 AM

Is numbness in the hands a side-effect of hydro?

statistically, probably not. If you have not been previously diagnosed with a peripheral neuropathy, cervical nerve root compression or carpal tunnel, I would go and see a neurologist to see what is wronr. Statistically it is one of the above aformentioned diagnoses but it could be something else so you should get yourself checked out.

Wow, Voyager, very impressive!

Personally I have had all sorts of strange side effects from various meds, but numbness has not been a side effect of hydro in my experience. Once I experienced numbness of the extremities, and also lost my sense of smell, when I was on IM buprenorphine. I was told neither were known side effects, but both conditions cleared up as soon as I stopped the bupe.

I get numbness in my hands and particularly my fingers, occasionally in my feet. I always figured it was poor circulation but who knows. I just blame everything on the fibro these days. If the numbness is not a side effect of the hydro probably something worth mentioning to the doc.

Thanks all. I did have surgery 2 weeks ago and have been taking more hydro than normal. I will mention this to the doctor.

I get tingling or numbness in the hands and arm, especially in the morning upon waking.

I attributed this to the beginnings of withdrawal type symptoms after sleeping and going without hydro. Someone else suggested I just sleep heavier and sleep on my hands and arm more causing them to go numb.

There was a lengthy discussion thread on this topic (tingling and numbness from a new hydro user) somewhere on the free boards last week with lots of replies with personal experiences.

Perhaps someone could put the link here if they find it.

I posted about "hydro related pins and needles" about a week ago,and did get quite a few replies. While the tingling has subsided,I'm still afraid it will happen again-it was pretty scary. It wasn't just my hand falling asleep,it was consistent tingling in my hands, sometimes radiating up my arms,in my feet a bit as well, and sometimes in my face around my mouth. This would happen throughout the day,and lasted a few weeks. I never found out exactly what it was,but did attribute SOME of it to anxiety. Anxiety over the sensations probably caused it to be a bit worse. I had posted because the only correlation between the pins and needles (which by the way,was never really numbness-I could still feel) that I could think of would be my hydro consumption. Though I have taken the drug on and off over the last four years, these were new symptoms that arose after taking the pills for about a month. I didn't know what else could have brought it on. I'm now taking Klonopin and codeine (not together) and just hope that it dosen't happen again. IT could be caused by many things-MS,diabetes,Lyme disease,B-12 deficiency.....I'm hoping it was just something simple, like B-12 (I don't eat much meat, and hadn't been eating well to begin with while on the meds, and was eating even LESS when the scary tingling began.....). So I don't know if I have helped you at all,but thoght I might pipe in,seeing that it was probably me that the previous poster was refering to. Feel free to PM me.

Please help-hydro related "pins and needles"? (LINK)

I have numbness in my hands, too. Maybe your problem is like mine- you might have an impingement of your Median nerve in your carpal tunnel, pronator teres, or your subscapularius. I go to a chiropractor who uses a technique called "active release" to work the scar tissue out, along with about 7-8 different stretches targeting these areas. It is the only thing that works for me. My problem happens every year about this time from overusing muscles all Spring, Summer, and Fall doing masonry work. After his treatments, and the stretching, combined with less work in the winter, I'm ready to rip myself apart again for another season. Maybe a change of careers is in order.
