Has anyone experienced weight gain by taking Norco or Lortab?
I was just curious because I have. I have gained about 25 lbs in 2 years of taking them. I used to weigh about 155-160 which is pretty slim for someone 5'10" and now am weighing about 183.
My stomach is the thing that is getting fat . Legs are still kind of skinny.
I want to lose some weight but I seem hungry when i take meds. Maybe I need a holiday to lose some weight.

Hmmm... weird. I actually seem 'less hungry' when I take my meds. I guess, as they say, different people react differently

I am the opposite, too. I'm not hungry at all. I have to force myself to eat anything.

Opiates make me hungry, specifically for richer foods. But then again, I guess this wouldn't have been an interesting question if they made you crave broccoli and carrot sticks...

actually opiates slow down gastric motility, which mean food stays in your stomach longer, digestion is slowed and results in a decrease in appetite.....could be several things...due to whatever condition is causing you to need the hydro has curtailed some physical activity in general...also, age has a tendency to do exactly what you've described....are you taking any other meds? anti depressants, neurontin?

maybe the increased appetite is simply due to feeling "better" - IE: not hurting (?)
No idea, I know it sounds trite but entirely possible.
It makes me extremely nauseous and I have to force myself to eat so as not to feel even more nauseated. I think decreased appetite is more common, but anything is possible.... the old "everyone is different" line force-fed once again

I too have gained about 30 lbs taking hydro for a few years for chronic pain condition. I attribute the gain to my reduced activity since my accident plus I get the "munchies" when I take too many pills and end up with a bag of doritos watching Maury.

I do notice a decreased hunger. Although I do keep good eating habits I have not noticed any significant weight gain.

I find that I have very little appetite. In the past 7 months, I have lost about 15 pounds, which was good because I had a baby in Oct, 2002. I find I have to force myself to eat most of the time. I also discovered that taking the meds on an empty stomach makes them work quicker. Probably not such a good practice, though.

I also take xanax as well. I don't get the exercise I once did, that is for sure but seem to get the munchies after taking medication. It seems like a habit. I have bought some fruits and am trying not to miss a meal and then eat a bunch at one time.
I was suprised to see how much it really varies from not eating to eating a lot.

I have little to no appetite when taking Hydro (not to mention that sometimes I put off eating until dinner time - only eat one (LARGE) meal a day - sometimes I do this just to ensure that my meds work up to par, as they work so much better for me on an empty stomach) -
I usually take hydro and then don't eat a meal till dinner time - although I will eat a light snack like cheese and crackers or a bowl of cereal around 1 hour after a hydro dose.
I have been on hydrocodone regularly for about 2 1/2 - 3 years and have actually lost about 15-20 pounds....

I gained about 10 pounds but I eat less (much less). I do however drink much more soda than I ever did in my life. So that's where I believe my weight has come from. Norco/Pepsi 6 @ a day as needed.

I've lost weight.
Some due to pain, and then some due to pain relief and being able to move around more.

Besides the benefit of relieving the the pain, I have lost about 30lbs since July and am so happy but I know it won't last long, once I am off the meds for good, the weight will come back!! But I am going to try like the heck to avoid that from happening!

I have pretty much the same profile. The hydro works much better for me on an empty stomach and I don't have the nausea any more since I changed from the 10/650's to the 10/500. I am actually losing weight and rarely have an appetite - although I do crave Coke Icee's from 7-Eleven like crazy.

I have no problem at all keeping my weight steady while on hydro. I usually don't eat for about an hour after taking the hydro, as I find food in my stomach reduces the effectiveness of the meds. Plus when I do eat, especially in the morning, it's fruits and fibers, to keep things moving. A couple of experiences with hydro-constipation convinced me that what I eat is important!
Plus I do not touch alcohol since starting hydro. I have read too much, here on DB and other places, about the disastrous effects of alcohol/APAP combos on the liver! So I don't have to worry about all those beer calories anymore!!!

Unless your condition has totally impaired all movement, you really need to get some exercise! It could help with your depression/anxiety too.
Walk on the treadmill. Or try some simple crunches if the weight is settling in your belly! Ask a trainer or a phys therapist for some tips on exercises that won't aggravate your existing pain. As we get older the metabolism slows down, you need to get it moving again, burn off those donuts!
Hope this helps.

Benzos have made me hungry in general but while taking hydro I don't eat hardly at all. Meds work much better on an empty stomach and frankly I just don't think about it. Plus my metabolism is so high that I can fluctuate 10 lbs in a week easy either way but all in all i haven't experienced any weight gain. Some loss actually.

i've gained weight. i haven't been eating more, actually i notice that i get full easily. it feels like everything i eat is very slow in digesting, and my metabolism has been extra low since i've been on hydro regularly. does constipation contribute to weight gain? it sure seems like it, everything staying in my system longer.

Good question, and not one that I remember seeing before in any of our periodic (and lengthy) Hydro Constipation threads.
I cannot stress too much how important it is for my lower GI system to start the day with a big bowl of All Bran and a banana. It would be days between "movements" if I went for the Denny's triple-eggs-and-saugage fiesta that I really want to be eating while I watch Jerry Springer......but that's just me.
