Oh, yuck! My appendix ruptured when I was 14 weeks pregnant and so they wouldn't knock me out for the surgery. Instead the horrible anesthesiologist I had used a spinal block which wore off before they finished. When I said I could feel them sewing my guts up, I was told "it's only pressure, not pain"...it was most definitely gut-wrenching PAIN. They gassed me instead of more anesthesia and it was the most miserable surgery I have had (and I've had LOTS of surgeries.) The post-op pain was much worse than even my c-section or hysterectomy (abdominal--not done at same time as c-section)...I had demerol IM for about 2 days then percocet for about a week after that. I think the reason it was more painful is because of the abdominal muscles getting cut, and perhaps the visceral pain associated with getting into the peritoneum. It DOES get better, but you'll be slow moving for several weeks. The intense pain should be less severe after a few days. It sucks, but the surgical pain was far less than the rupture! They said my appendix was the size of a banana. I don't know if that makes any difference on how much pain you feel, though.
If your pain gets worse or you get red streaks at the incision, CALL YOUR DOCTOR or surgeon. I noticed that pain increased with activity, so try to stay in bed a few days.
I feel for you!

Hi BD,
Sorry to hear about your pain. My appendix was taken out decades ago, but I will never forget that pain. Things were different then, I was in the hospital for 9 days after surgery (it burst on the way out), and I remember begging for the demerol (I think) shots. Since I was a kid, I don't remember what meds they gave me for post-op, but I know I was feeling better after being released. The way they kick patients out of hospitals so soon after surgery is in my opinion criminal.
I wish you all the best,
Fred

Ruptured Appendix 1973 (Oh what a night)
After a week of pain before it ruptured, they refused to do anything until my white cell count was up.
Week and 1/2 in hospital with pain, tubes, and whiney patient in next bed. Pain meds (Demerol) just didn't cut it, but that's all that I got.
Month out of work.
That was in the stone age, now things are much better for most.
Hope you get to feeling better soon.

I'm pretty sure I have read on the boards that people take percocet for breakthrough pain while taking hydro as well? Anybody??

ye well my surgery was monday .....so I have been home since tuesday and I finally made it up the stairs today (thurs).....so you get the idea....thak you everyon for the kind words......as they truely help...plau I knew someone here would make me feel a little better.....I have been in bed for three days and now am going crazy!!!!!....but i think I went home soon because, the fact is my appendix never bursted THANK YOU WHOEVER.....and for once in my life I had enough sence to go to the ER three or four days after the pain started....I thought I had liver disease at first and was really reall really worried about me taken my meds.....like hydro or anything w/ APAP and then I decided to go online and serch "pain in right lower abdomen" ....well lots of stff came up, and that did not help me sleep much at all on Sunday night. Thus making a misrible day befor going into the hospital w/o knowing on top of it all that I was going to have surgery in like 3-4 hours......if I would have known that I would have drank like THRE gallons of water....since they dont let you drink anything brfore OP./////and plus I am a smoker, unfortunatly, and I was w/o a cig for like 6hours on top of that....MAN!!!!! I will have to say I am very very greatfull mine did not burst......but I guess the pain is worst for men my age (25-30) as we "dont handle the pain very well down there" as the doc said, or he thought I was just a wussy//////but I am not going to lie.......I am definatly that because I am hurting....point blank period. Well I guess that is all the rambling for now untill I get up here a little later......if anyone has any answers to the hydro and percocet question from my eirlier post please reply as Iam still afraid to mix them even if its a few hours in between.....thanks again folks you guys are the best.....BlazinDego

I had mine out on New Years Eve? It sucks. I still have occasional pain and muscle spasms when I lift things.
It took about a week before I could bend over to the bottom drawer of the refrigerator.
Treat the hydro and the oxy as it were the same. You can switch between the two every 4-6 hours. When they talk about break through pain they mean oxycontin and hydro. Instant release verse time release.
Personally I wouldnt take the percocet. They make me more constipated then hydros. Also, I would drink some Metamucil or some sort of fiber. The first two days I had to sh*t standing up.
On the 1- 10 pain scale.
10+ day 2
7-8 week 1
5 week 2
3 months occasional pain especially when moving
Did you have the laposcopy or the old style incision? I had the old style and have a 6 in scare. My wife had the laposcopy and she recovered allot quicker but she was only 21 at the time.

Sorry I just measured its only 3 in. it seems bigger when I think back.
If you have hydro I would take them over the percoset. For me it last longer and im not as constipated.
Percs are stronger but seem to wear off quicker. You can mix the two but remember take the lower dose first (hydro) so you body doesnt get use to it. Then it wont work as well.
Also if the pain seems to be getting worse. Call the doctor.ASAP
You should be feeling a little better all though the first 2 days are rough. But if your vomiting and such that can indicate an infection.
The appendics may have burst and the op site can get infected. Not to scare you but that happened to my sister, after a week she started to get sick and had to be re-hospitalized. She had an infection from the surgery.
But if all youre felling is pain thats normal. The day after I came home from the hospital every single muscle in my body hurt and it felt like someone stuck there fist in my stomach and twisted.
(I would) Take 1 to 2 vicoden every 4-6 and then tonight take 2 percs.
Youll be OK. Let us know how it goes. Good luck and feel better
