Please help-hydro related "pins and needles"?
      #106481 - 10/09/03 07:05 PM

After over a month of taking 7.5/500's,I began to experience pins and needles in my hands, feet, and other random places (occasionally in my face). Is this neuropathy? My idea was that perhaphs because narcotics can increase the pressure in your head, some nerves may be being touched. Is this possible, has anyone heard of this happening? All I know is that I am tapering off my meds, and feeling extremely frightened. This has been going on for a couple of weeks now,and seemed to be especially bad today,my first day off my pills. Any help would be most appreciated!

In an otherwise healthy person, any increase in intracranial pressure from taking oral narcotics would have absolutely no impact whatsoever. In fact, narcotics are frequently used, with appropriate monitoring on patients with head injuries...so this is not normal, and is not related to the narcotics...sounds like perhaps a circulatory problem...or if you have a history of nerve root compromise from some type of spinal injuries...but from the Norco...no

Hmm. I had viral meningitis last August-but it may be strange to assume that there is residual inflamation. It just seems stange that this all began while on the meds.....

Ya, my hands get kinda numb sometimes when I overload on OXY or hydro. Are you eating properly??? I notice when I skip meals, or don't take my vitamins it happens more frequently. Just my experience, KO P.S. Especially the fingertips. I used methadone for a while and I'd wake up in the middle of the night with my whole arm asleep. It got so bad I'd have to get up and get out of bed and start my day early cuz I'd get up, get my arm awake , try to go back to sleep and it would start again. Methadone was absolutely the worst for this particular situation and I've NEVER taken it since. Later. KO

I've noticed that I get "pins & needles", mostly in my extremeties, much more often when I take hydro. I really can't pinpoint the hydro as the cause though, as I have advanced Lyme Disease, hypothyroidism, & prefer to sit Indian-style on the floor while reading or watching TV.

Good Luck!

1. The first thing that came to mind when reading the last part of your post was that the increasing tingling over the past month is symptomatic of your increased tapering of optiates (i.e. withdrawal symptoms). However, you note you experienced the sensations prior to tapering and were on a low strength (no indication of amount) for a relatively short period (a month), so withdrawal seems questionable unless there are other circumstances you didn't mention.

2. If the tingling becomes numbness and/or is localized to one hand or one side of the foot/leg - get to a Neurologist ASAP and get an MRI as there may be pressure in nerve root(s) caused by disc herniation, etc. Waiting only increases the chances of permanant loss of feeling and/or pain - trust me.

==

Since I noticed that a few others posted similar experiences, here's mine: I too have been experiencing tingling sensations in my hands and feet and having my hand/arm fall asleep and turn "cold" at night lately after taking hydro for over a year. I have been attributing it to nighttime withdrawal as it happens about 4 hours after I go to sleep and the hydro I took at bedtime is wearing off. It goes away after being awake and taking more hydro or oxy.

Is there another link between tingling and opiate usage that anyone can think of?

Have you been buying your meds online Janey? How much were you taking maximum? Were you taking opiates prior to this?

Feeling "pins and needles" in the extremities is listed as a possible side effect of morphine (see below). I have experienced the sensation a number of times when I used MSContin (100mgs 3X/day) some years ago. May be the high dosage I was on, but I recall this being an issue when I was on 30mgs 3X/day. It wasn't so bothersome that I worried about it and I definitely remember my doc mentioning this possible side effect.
It wouldn't be unheard of to assume that all opiates may cause this sensation to some degree. But, in my experience, morphine is the only opiate to have caused this feeling.

Morphine side effects include but are not limited to:

anxiety
involuntary movement of the eyeball
blurred vision / double vision

I have been having problems for more than a year with tingling "asleep" feeling in my arms at night. Sometimes it is so severe it wakes me. I don't take narcotic pain relievers. I just started tramadol about 6 months ago and I have not seen any increase or decrease in this symptom. I have noticed that it is my left arm that is the worst and yesterday to my shock I noticed that my left leg is slightly numb. My whole left side is giving me fits today, the leg and hip hurt badly and the left arm stays "asleep" most of the time. I guess it is time for another doctor visit and maybe an xray or mri. Is that what a bulging disc does? Would it make my hip joint hurt worse?

Well, thanks to everyone who answered. To answere XanaxNY,I had been taking codeine and hydro on and off for about four months. It just seems that my symptoms came about since I got my Hydro from Tropical-yes I do order online.
I keep checking out what these symptoms could mean. There are alot of things, ranging from B-12 deficiency to multiple sclereosis. I'm sorry to sound like such a basket case, but anything involving problems with the nervous system scare me. I actually just started taking codeine again, and the symptoms are still there-I know this isn't a withdrawl issue,as someone mentioned earlier. The problem arose while on the medication. Does anyone think it is possible for it to get slightly worse before it gets better? Anything?

I too wake up at night sometimes with the "dead arm" condition... I figured since taking the Hydro I sleep a lot harder... Normally, when your body weight is on your arm while you're sleeping, your body will readjust to take that weight off... With the Hydro, your body is in a deep sleep and continues to put pressure on the arm for hours, hence, numb arm syndrome... This is strictly my common sense rational and may be medically, completely off-base...

Yeah, but sadly, this isn't just me falling asleep on my arm....it's the sensation of "pins and needles" in my hands/palms,lips and sometimes feet, going on a few weeks now.

Something you might consider. I have been taking Hydro and now MS Contin for more than 3 years. One thing I noticed is that while I feel EXTREEM pain in my back and hip from from my degenerating discs, other more minor pain and other "sensations" are less noticable. Then I take my pain meds and the pain lessens, the needles and pins feelings in my feet (due to nerve damage from surgery) becomes more noticable. The pain masks the needles and pins feeling.
