      #106156 - 10/08/03 10:42 AM

my wife is home for lunch with her usual nauseating headache
shes been haveing them ever since her accident involveing
a neck injury. months ago.
of course her so called pain doctor will only rx ultram,
his comments about lortab were this
(THOSE THINGS WILL PUT YOU OUT ON THE SRTEET CORNER)
i heard it with my own ears!!! now thats not a real biggy because she has a wonderful P/C/P who gives her lortab 10's also.
now the problem is they do nothing for her headaches, actually im beginging to think maybe theyre makeing them worse.
what should she do???? would soma help???
what other meds are available to ask her docotor about besides the lortab, maybe something just for headaches???
ive seen some other post about headache meds but im leaving right now in a hurry and was hopeing someone who has experience with this, could possibly do my research since i need some info fast,
thanks gage

gage,

One of the side effects of hydro (Lortab) is headaches- if she already has them, I wouldn't think she'd want to take that. I can't recommend a good headache medicine for you not knowing what sort of headaches she's having. Midrin worked great for me. Also- I tend to get a horrible headache when I take hydro. for my back pain- a price to pay, but sometimes I have to wonder if it's worth it as the headaches *are* pretty severe! Good luck!

Ouch!! What a jerk doctor...sorry, but he MUST be related to my last psychiatrist!!

Amyway, has she tried anything like Imitrex or Zomig? Those work well for my migraines and get rid of the nausea as well. Soma is a sleeping pill and may just help her get to sleep, to sleep the pain off.

Good luck!!

I am certainly no expert, gage, especially compared to some of the whiz kids on this site (One of the many reasons I love DB, btw) However, I understand that Fiorinal or Fioricet, which is aspirin or acetaminophen with butalbital (a barbituate) has helped a lot of headache sufferers. I am sure they will log in with their more experienced comments but I thought I'd give you a fast answer, anyway. Good LUCK!

I have suffered from migraines my entire life and have found Imitrex to be a blessing on most of them. Also a muscle relaxer at night helps on some of the stress induced ones I can get. Go get a second opinion from a different Dr. - there are so many quacks out there these days.. Good Luck.

Gage,

If she hasn't already, she needs to see a neurologist. Did anyone do an MRI to rule out anything more serious? Do you know if she has tension headaches or migraines? Tension headaches feel like a tight elastic band around your head, and migraines feel like your head is exploding from the inside on one side of the head. That's oversimplified, but you get the idea. Fioricet does work very well for some people if she has tension headaches, one problem with it though are rebound headaches. In other words, she has to avoid taking it 2-3 days in a row because the next day can lead to a worse headache. Migraines are a different story altogether, but a neurologist is really the one who should be examining her.

Good luck.

I have also seen doctors use bets-blockers on headaches, although I think that Imitrex or other related drugs like that should be tried as well.
Sometimes I get headaches from taking things like Lorcet, you get rebound headaches from the tylenol in them. I think a trip to a neuro would be a wise move.

Good luck and take care,
Sarah

I started getting debilitating migraines as a teenie bopper. My doc back then ALWAYS gave me Demerol in combination with an anti-emetic. Demerol worked great until it wore off, and stopped the vomiting, but my headaches almost always outlasted the Demerol injections. My neurologist tried Inderal (sp?) but that made me feel like I wanted to kill myself (literally) and Midrin was OK IF I got it in my system early enough (at first sign of the aura) but Imitrex made me have such serious muscle spasms that I was hospitalized for it. I also tried Fioricet, but it was only slightly effective for my headaches. I tried Ergotamine/Caffeine too...had very strange side effects, but was also somewhat effective.

Even with all the different drugs I tried over the years (and not all are listed here) the most effective analgesic is Demerol or Stadol with Vistaril in combination with EXCEDRIN MIGRAINE. Believe it or not, the Excedrin really helps and is, of course OTC. Problem is, few ER's give narcotics for migraines any longer. Most docs won't prescribe them regularly, either. If you suffer very frequent headaches, a neurology appointment is a must.

Good luck and best wishes!

night shade, we sound a lot alike. I used to be prescribed Stadol NS, but over the last 8 years have developed a tolerance to it. I'm scared to take the amount that would actually get rid of a headache. Last ER trip, the doc wouldn't do morphine even though I told him it works better than Demerol. Demerol just knocks it down to a 3-4. But, after sleeping from the phenergan they combine with it, often, it's right back again. So, I wait another 12 hours in agony and go back again. My new neuro now thinks he will be able to take me off the fioricet #3 that works on some of the headaches. I've tried it before, didn't work. But, I guess he'll have to see for himself.

Frustrating isn't it???

Lortab often causes rebound headaches. I do hope she gets better soon!

I second what Toky says - Lortab can definitely cause rebound headaches. I've suffered from migraines for about 14 years that have increased in frequency, duration, vomiting, and pain level over the past several months.

I've tried virtually every migraine/pain med on the market - Imitrex, Zomig, Midrin, Lortab, morphine, Ultram, & OTC meds. The only thing that I've found that works for me (will not always completely relieve the pain but will always prevent it from worsening so I take it at the first sign) is Stadol NS. Fortunately I've finally found a compassionate doctor as many physicians will not script Stadol due to its possible addictiveness & many class action lawsuits against the manufacturer.

I wish your wife the very best.

I have found the perfect cure for my migraines is : 1 norco,1 zomig or imitrex or frova (any of the triptan meds), and 1 flexiril( or any muscle relaxant). This combination is a sure thing! Hope it helps.
