FURIOUS at my Doc and Surgeon
      #107220 - 10/13/03 09:17 AM

I have been experiencing pain in my low back since the early summer, which has gotten progressively worse.
After messing about for weeks, I convinced the doctor to refer me to a pain clinic, where I was put on low doses of Roxicodone. Finally I am pain-free, and able to tolerate my physical therapy, which I diligently go to. I have done everything to please my doc, but he was, and still is a strong believer in not using painkillers. If they were to take me off them, I'd be in some serious pain again, it was the reason I went on them.

So today, I went to see a surgeon, because the MRI show two bulging discs. One mild bulge, which causes pain, and one significant, which doesn't. I spent all of five minutes in his office. He gave me some neuro tests, said "I'm not worried about your discs, but I want you to come off the narcotics" Mind you he is not the one that prescribed them to me, he believed I should be taken off them solely because they are "habit forming" and he quoted me the whole Rush Limbaught media thing. That was it.
I went, for back pain, to a surgeon, who was ONLY concerned about addiction, not pain, who proceeds to tell me to come off a drug that a different doctor is prescribing me. He doesn't even know me, and didn't even want to know about pain issues. I wasted my morning to have one of my stupic doctor's holistic-minded church buddies take on the role of addiction counselor, not a surgeon, and lecture me on the use of narcotics.

My PCP has been doing this with a slew of specialists, who I thought were all seeing me because of pain. All of these, except the pain clinic (which I picked out), did not do their job, but instead acted as drug counselors telling me all narcotics are bad and addictive. I am so furious, I called my PCP, told the machine, send me my records, I am leaving this doctor, and you're lucky I don't sue. They are lucky, as there is also some tampering with my records going on at the hands of the doc. The pain clinic has a set of records calling me a drugseeker, I obtained those same records, however, magically, there's no mention of me being a drugseeker.

I'm so sorry for your treatment...that is so typical...I had surgury and the dang Dr. would not give me any thing but Motrin 800 for a dang surgury...I still have not recovered from....A lot of Dr's judge people instead of helping them ..I hate Dr's myself for many of the reasons you have mentioned and fired out a letter to my Dr's head Board he belongs to....now he will give me tiny increments...after being told he had to elp his patient in true pain...They are pigs and so are alot of pharmasists....

That really sucks . Ya know I have read some other post about peoples' records that are missing info, at least the ones they get, like in your case. I am curious to know from anyone here at DB, I know many of you are well versed in stuff like this, is that legal to do. To give your records to a doctor that say one thing and give you a set that say another. I would just love to be able to tell the doctor face to face that if he thinks I am a drug-seeker why does he feel he needs to hide it from me, like I wouldn't ever find out DUH! So does anyone if this is legal?

These bloody b------s!

I was just telling my boyfriend that I fear going to the rheumatologist because he/she may not treat my pain. I mean, yes, get to the bottom of the problem. Find a way to manage the problem and get it under control AND treat the pain until there's some sort of breakthrough. Trust me, I don't like taking painkillers and wish that I wasn't in a position to HAVE to take them.

Funny you mention medical records though. I got mine from my gastro and it's odd that he listed all of the meds that I was on for my Hep C and all of the side effects he was treating to counteract them. He neglected to notate the hydro and benzos that he prescribed for me though. Hmm! I wondered what that was all about and after reading this, I wonder if he would classify me as a drug seeker if he'd sent those records to another doctor.

I wish you the best of luck in managing your pain. You know, it's pretty sad...you want to tell your docs exactly what's on your mind, but at the same time, you look at them as someone who can potentially help you and so you fear setting them off and not wanting to further assist you. Damned if you do and damned if you don't.
