Hydro w/d symptoms not alleviated by codeine?
      #107035 - 10/12/03 02:52 PM

I haven't had any Hydro in about five days. My "withdrawal" symptoms seem to mostly psychological-LOTS of anxiety, depression, sadness (I'v cried more in the last few days than I have in a few years). I'v felt extremely panicky and "trapped in my skin".
I do have codeine on hand, and take small (36-40 mg) doses, mostly to alleviate my panic. Sure,it makes me feel a bit better, but I am still not hungry,frantic.....a total basket case. Does it make any sense that while the codeine might help,it won't stop the way I feel from lack of hydro? At the risk of sounding stupid *ducking head*,would it be because one is an opiate and the other an opioid?
Also,if anyone would like to comment on my symptoms, either in being normal or toally insane, please do. I haven't been depressed like this in years......

I think it would depend on how much hydro your body was used to having every day. Somebody will no doubt post an equivalency chart for hydro and codeine, I've seen it before but I don't know where to find it. 30mg of codeine (one Codeisan) in my experience is equivalent to maybe 2.5 mg of hydro, so I would need four Codeisan, or 120mg of codeine, for every 10/325 Norco. But that's just me, everybody's different.

Many people reccomend multiple doses of OTC Immodium during hydro holidays. Immodium is a non-euphoric opiate and minimizes many of the w/d symptoms, not just the intenstinal uproar.

You don't say why you stopped the hydro. If you're taking a holiday to decrease your tolerance, I'm not sure if substituting codeine for hydro will have the desired effect. I have to say the symptoms you are experienceing sound like par for the course with opiate/opioid w/d. It's tough to go through this, but the worst of it shouldn't last more than 5 days or so. You might try a half mg of xanax or something like that to see if it helps with the psychological symptoms.

We all go through this, or something very much like it, eventually. I hope you're feeling better soon.

It completely depends on how much hydro you were taking. The symptoms you describe do not sound at all unusual for opiate withdrawl. It doesn't really matter WHICH opiate you are withdrawing from, if you have sustained physical dependence and/or psychological dependence, you will experience some degree of withdrawal.

Follow this link to the CLINICAL OPIATE WITHDRAWAL SCALE (COWS) for more info on symptoms and severity.

Hope this helps you. Best of luck, withdrawal takes a big toll on a person.
