Rush went deaf from painkillers
      #107281 - 10/13/03 01:36 PM

Hi everyone,

I have not been around in awhile but when I heard this specific quote on one of the news channels, I thought i better share it with all of you.

This morning I was watching the news when I heard this little teaser, " When we come back we will speak to an addiction speacialist as well as the doctor that treated Rush for his hearing loss, could he have lost his hearing due to the painkillers?"

My mouth just dropped open and I sat there thinking that there is no way that could be true, after all...no doctor has ever told me about this.

Anyway, when they returned they spoke to one of the doctors that had treated Rush for his hearing loss and later placed the coquler (sp??) implants. Well when asked if it is possible that he went deaf due to the meds she said she did not know for sure what he had abused so she could not quote specifically on his case, but there have been many cases of people losing their hearing from abusing hydrocodone and other narcotics such as that.

Then the addiction specialist said that this is far more common than we all know. She said she see's a lot of people who have lost their hearing in a similar manner.

Oh-My-Gosh!! I had no idea this was possible! That is such a trip. I wonder why I have not ever heard of this specific side effect. Man, that would have scared me so much, it's almost good that I did not know. But I did want to tell everyone here and ask if anyone else has heard of this.

Yeah, I heard that too, but since I haven't seen or heard of anyone losing thier hearing due to opiate usage, I would need some cliical proof before accepting that as a real danger. Since Rush was busted, that was the only time I have heard this, as the radio attributed his hearing loss to his drug use.

THere was a thread on here quite a while back about this very thing. Someone, I beleive, had asked a question about hydro consumption and hearing loss. I think they were having a problem with their ears seeming to be overly sensitive to loud noises. Someone cuold probably find it doing a search about hearing. I have never read or heard of it again, till now. Like you flea, it has never been told to me by any professional that taking hydro can affect your hearing. Interesting!

I believe this to be a true fact also..I have noticed in my years of taking pain meds my hearing is going bad or maybe it is just age...LOL..but really I do notice a significate hearing inpairment and ringing and sensitivity to loud or even no so loud noises and then not be able to hear during riding lessons at all..yikes..I have got my self down to very little pain meds..I'm not sleeping well and my pain is not to good either, but I thought i was a good Idea to cut them back so they help relieve the pain bette when I do take them..I believe in the heating problems...sorry to say..

Sorry to say this folks but YES it is true. You can lose your hearing from extended hydro or oxycodone usage. Both are well known to be, oto toxic drugs (i.e. poisonous to the nerves of the ear). In other words they can be toxic In doses that are higher than what is considered normal over an extended period of time.

I wish Rush a speedy recovery.

No one in this group (whether or not you agree with Rush's politcal views) should take cheap shots at him when he is down. That could very easily be any of us that are in this forum (as most of us are chronic pain patients) so SHAME ON YOU. Of all people I would think that this would be the last group that would bring politics into the mix when someone is ill. Some of you people really need to get a grip.

I couldn't have said it better and won't attempt to. Funny how one side claims that the other is full of "hate speech", homophobia, vitriol, and bigotry...yet exhibit so many of those tendencies maginified.

Um, I think you might be lecturing to the wrong thread here. I just asked if the hearing loss was true. No one seemed to be attacking Rush here. I am a die hard liberal that truly detests the political views of Rush Limbaugh, but as you can see....I did not even mention that in my post. I am able to separate between a person and their specific political ideologies. When I first heard about this story I felt nothing but sadness for Rush. I was horrified that he had to go through this struggle in such a public way and I felt nothing but compassion for him and his family. I do not think I would wish what he is going through right now on even my worst enemy (OK, well maybe my WORST enemy but NO ONE else!!)

I just returned to Drugbuyers after a couple of weeks away. I love it here, but more often than not I would post something that was either a personal experience or was information I thought was important to pass on. Sadly it seemed that I would end up getting called out on my post(s)and or yelled at (figuratively speaking of course) by those at DB that felt it necessary to take everything personal or just wanted to nit pick at everything.

I had always thought that the people here at Drugbuyers would be a reprieve from the condescending view I always seemed to run into at many of the doctors and nurses I have met since my back pain began. Actually, I am still sure that the majority of you are, but when I come back to my first post in several weeks and find someone else saying we need to stop bashing Rush and not knowing why this statement is on this thread, it just makes me wonder if I should even waste my time here.

Sorry for the tangent, I guess I am just a little tired of the comments. I also did not mean to change the topic of this thread as I find the deafness of Rush to be quite significant to many of us here that are using narcotics for chronic pain. So please only respond to that, as I do not want to get TYPED AT (ha) for that one too!!

FWIW, the "Rush bashing" posts have been deleted from the thread so unless you're following somewhat closely you may have missed it. As to Rush, I feel sorry for anyone going through what he's now dealing with, whether it's Rush, Hillary, or anyone between. Addiction sucks, period, and possible under-documented side effects like hearing loss are a real tragedy.

If there had been some "Rush Bashing" on this thread prior to my reading it, then I truly apologize. That would at least make more sense!! I could not understand why in the world someone would say that when it seemed to me that no one had said anything about Rush, good, bad or indifferent.

Anyway, if this was the case then I am sorry!!

just got my meds from YOD/Woody's, on the Rx info sheet for Norco, one of the side effects says, "Tell your doctor if any of these highly unlikely, but serious side effects occur: impairment or loss of hearing (especially with high does for long periods)..."
