The good doctor is being harassed.
Has been harassed.
They just won't leave him alone.

I know this sounds harsh, but one makes certain choices. You can't have it all. If you are going to be in varying flares of pain for the rest of your life, you don't have children. Easy and more considerate for them.

Don't apologize! This is an excellent opportunity to discuss how chronic pain cases are gone after by the AMA and how people seem to think they have the god-given right to bear children, no matter what health they are in. I am thankful you opened this up!

For me, it's hard to give an opinion on this without knowing the exact details of the 30 pills a day thing, if he even really did that. Why they would be 10 mg OxyContin to achieve 300 mg is beyond me, when he could simply prescribe 3-4 80 mg Oxy's to do the same thing. Maybe he was giving people multiple months' supply (yet for some reason didn't just give post-dated scripts instead, as long as it was going to be illegal anyway), or maybe he was maintaining addicts, who knows. If he did write the prescriptions for a month at a time, what is more puzzling is what pharmacist would fill a prescription for 900 OxyContin. Why wouldn't you just switch a patient to something stronger? 30 OxyContin a day really needs an explanation before forming an opinion.

As for the pregnant woman, it's the withdrawal that will kill the baby, not the opiates (although it's certainly possible), as methadone-dependent women give birth every day.

I personally think the guy should have the ability to do what he wants, as far as prescribing power. If he wants to give more than a month's supply of a painkiller to a patient, he should be able to, and it should be legal to maintain opiate addicts how the physician sees fit. I hope the guy can get set free, but I doubt it.

Actually, I was referring to the OXY IR capsules, actual capsules which can be broken apart, that is why they work so fast. I agree with you that it was bound to get attention, though.
but the caps are only 5 mg, not 10. or they used to be.

I will look around for some more info, but on the news they reported the pharmacies were SUPPOSEDLY "in on it" and if I remember correctly, there was 10-12 pharmacies that only filled his prescriptions exclusively. I will see what else I can find about that.

I almost went to see this doctor. He certainly does not deserve to rot in jail. He is a pioneer in the top-quality management of chronic pain patients who have tried everything and are living with suicide levels of pain. mayeb lorcet works for some of you but ive had pain myself that took 80mg of oxycontin ever six hours and 10mg of methadone every three hours. there is no dosage ceiling to non-toxic drugs and tolerance develops quickly with people in severe (i dont mean "oh, my back hurts really bad pain), i mean severe(like give me releif or give me death) kind of pain. this isn't the first time hes been attacked. the first time they took his license two of his patients ended up being patients of dr. kevorkian. read about it on the web. this doctor deserves to still be in practice, i cant believe the ignorant people who would condemn a man who has helped bring life back to people who were about to end it all. he has helped way more than he has hurt. So a few of his patients diverted his drugs, thats not his fault. he treated the best way he knew how to and hes been doing this for years. the $1000 consult fee is because of the way he initiated treatment. you went there he started you on a dose. you went back everyday for a week and he uped your dose until you were comfortable. then he gave you ninety days worth of meds. that would be worth a grand to me if i was ready to kill myself because of intolerable pain levels. after the first time they took his license and he got it back he was the first physician in the USA to be able to write refills on CII narcotics.
you need to read up on what is really going on before you say something like "this guy should rot in prison". intolerance and prejudice like that shows just how ignorant people can often be. thanks for letting me vent. you early posters make me sick

I know this doctor personally. He is not a criminal. The DEA shut him down in 1996 and he had 5 patients die or commit suicide. He treated many patient's with dignity. He is also an attorney. He was exonerated and had been on 60 minutes. The doctor has always been controversial.
Methadone clinics routinely have given pregnant woman narcotics. Oh I forgot that is a government sanctioned program so I guess it's the old double standard. When Bill learned of this latest investigation (by way of the Washington Post) he weaned his patient's and found them other doctors willing to help. Many of his patient's were in the worst kind of pain imaginable and some were terminal. Terminal patient's die, and yes I'm sure they had large amounts of Oxy in their blood. He is of exceptional character and those that have never meet or spoken to him or no little about him should be careful believing what the newspapers and government have to say about him. His protocols were approved by the DEA and the Va. state medical board as well as many pain specialist's. Paying a thousand dollars to see a specialist is not an exorbinate amount of money. He went as far as contacting the DEA and asking to have a meeting with them so they could help him weed out the addicts. The calls and letters went unanswered.
I believe they were still PO'ed at him for winning the first round in 1996 and had set out to ruin truely one of the most compassionate pain doctors in the USA. His arrest will have a chilling effect on the way many pain specialists treat patients from this point forward. I just feel bad for his wife and children.
Take care. Billylll

What a mean-spirited, tunnel-visioned government we have sometimes. It takes your breath away. Another victim of the War On Drugs.
