I found two different bottles in my cabinet, I know *what* they are, my question is to their effectiveness compared to Lortab.
The first one is a hot pink oblong tablet made by Ranbaxy called Propoxyphene Napsylate 100 mg./Acetaminophen 650 mg.
The second one is Talacen made by Winthrop Pentazocine HCI 25 mg./Acetaminophen 500 mg.
Oh, hit the jackpot - found 6 Lorcet tabs made by Forest? dated 1996 I doubt they still have much kick to them.
Thanks for any info folks

the propoxy is darvocet and they are not very strong. You have to subject your liver to alot of tylenol with those to get much pain relief. They work sometimes in a pinch if your going through withdrawls from running out of meds, but that's about it. I am not sure what the other is. Hope I could help some.

Greetings. The Talacen, as you know, is a blend of a small amount of Talwin (a sythetic opiate/opiod?) that has received mixed reviews as to it's pain-killing abilities, or lack of, and side effects (some say weird and unpleasant, YMMV), plus the usual load of the nasty, liver-destroying Tylenol (acetaminophen). A search on this fine board would probably reveal a load of info on Talwin (penta. . .however you spell it.)
Despite any expiration notations, the Lorcets should be fine if they've been kept in the dark and relatively dry and at room temperature. There could be the slightest deterioration in potency, but not much, if any. IME, both the other meds are bunk compared to Lorcet.
Good day, sir or madam, as the case may be.

Joff,
If I remember right, there was a debate about Talwin, whether it may induce w/d from Lorcet when taken in conjunction with
or any level of opiod in the system? Is this correct?
Legit, I haven't found much pain relief with the propoxy's.It is a lot of APAP for the little relief, but that's just my experience. Every Doc around these parts will prescribe them like candy.
Way back, I took Talwin after gallbladder surgery, but I was not disabled and on no other meds at the time. It did work for pain and put me to sleep too. I've not taken it since. A small, yellow, oblong tablet?
Not sure about the 7 yr old hydro.Hmmm...

Thank you everyone, you answered my questions. Darvocet has never done anything for me and I'll do some research on the Talwin. I guess I'll try the Lorcet and see if it still has any pain relieving qualities left - couldn't hurt I guess.
Thanks again!

Good point, Jeremiah, but that would only be the Talwin NX that would throw people into withdrawal symptoms if they'd been accustomed to Lorcet or the like, Talwin with the added ingredient noloxone (sp) (Narcan), which is an opiate antagonist. It was put in there, of course, to prevent people from injecting it, or from taking more than the recommended dosage in order to achieve some kind of "high."

Yes...anyone who has been taking hydro for an extended period of time will probably regret taking Talwin....also just a FYI note...the bathroom medicine cabinet is the WORST place to store your meds...it's the warmest, & usually the most humid room in the house...

Great point! That very point dawned on me after keeping my medication there for entirely too long. Then it "clicked" that storing meds in the bathroom was not a smart move...live and learn. Take care all!

Talacen has such a weak antagonism to opiates that I doubt it would cause withdrawals in most people. Unfortunately, it is also a pretty weak analgesic which can have some horrible side effects unrelated to withdrawals. Better than nothing in a pinch, maybe.

Leg, I did the same thing recently and really lucked out. Just happened that the doc had rx'd me prescription Pepcid, at the same time hubby had a flare-up in his back problem and the doc rx'd hydro and vioxx. Found a sealed bottle of Pepcid and a nearly full bottle of Vioxx, so saved some $$ there. I routinely clean out my med cabinet, which incidentally ISN'T the bathroom med cabinet, and am so glad I didn't toss those. My husband normally can't take NSAIDS because of stomach probs, but doc wanted him to take the Vioxx for one week, so that really came in handy.

Yes, that's one of the reason I was cleaning it out and moving them to a different location. By the way....the Lorcet was excellent even after all these years. Not at all familiar with the brand - but wow. Too bad it was just 6 instead of a whole bottle. Oh well, beggars can't be choosers! Thanks for all the info folks.
