neurontin and hydro
      #106026 - 10/07/03 06:44 PM

Hi Everyone,

I saw my doctor today, who prescribed Neurontin and Vicodin for my peripheral neuropathy. I did some research on the Net and found the Neurontin manufacturer's site. Not being a pharmacologist, I was confused about their info regarding how one drug effects the other. It seemed as if the Neurontin makes the Vicodin less effective. Anyone with any experience out there?

Best,
Sheena

I don't know how the neurontin will effect the vidodin, but I was given neur. about 8 months ago by my neuro. doc. I could not stand to take it. I was so loopy on this medcine. I could not drive after I had taken it, actually couldn't do much of anything. I do know some people tolerate it very well and it works well also. I didn't feel much in the pain relief area, but couldn't really take it long enough to see if it would help me or not. I am just letting ya know how the neurontin affected me. I am sure someone will have your answer, and if not you can ask your pharmacist.

One of my family members had neurotin prescribed for them. Diabetic neuropathy in the feet and hands. She hasn't had any side affects from them, but she considers it a total waste of time and money. They have not improved or slowed down the neuropathy that she can tell, and they do absolutely nothing for the pain.

Which by the way, she applied for ssi and her last and final court hearing, the doctor hired by social security testified that NEUROPATHY IS NOT PAINFUL. I almost fell out of my chair. It is both painful and debilitating. I am telling you it flat blows when you work all your life and when you are older and your health is horrible and you can't work anymore you have to undergo the absolute Best if kept off the board the government puts you thru to obtain that tiny pittance of income you were promised when you were paying your income taxes. And it is not the income that she really wants anyway. It is the health coverage.

I did take neurontin at one time along with oxycontin & percs for breakthrough pain when my leg was shattered in a car accident. It had actually been prescribed by my shrink to help with mood swings, which it did not help. It had no discernable effect on my mood or level of consciousness but it DID really help a little with the pain. I hope this helps you. Sorry you have to suffer like this

I was actually very relieved when the doc prescribed the neurontin as I don't want to be a slave to hydro forever. My daughter, who was 16 at the time, was prescribed neuro for migraines. She had no side effects at all, but it didn't help either. I'm only on day two with the neuro, and I've heard it does help particularly with neuropathy, so I'm going to hope. At least this doc happily prescribes the hydro as well. And, yes, it is absolutely absurd to say that neuropathy doesn't hurt. I cry every day it hurts so much. Thanks all.

I've been on Neurontin for about 16 months now. I take 900mg in the evening, usually after dinner. It does help me sleep very nicely. Can't say it really has a big effect on my pain level..but sleeping well helps with that. But I will say it takes some time, PCP said to give it at least 6 weeks.

I also take either Norco or Lortab and the Neurontin potentates the hydro like mad. My PCP warned me of this, also said it would have the same effect on OTC pain meds. My rough, non-scientific estimate is that the Neuro potentates almost to a factor of 2. One tab feels almost like two tabs.

Hope this helps,
Oceans

Hey Oceans,

May I ask what it was prescribed for, because I've heard it's more effective for some things than others. This morning I woke up with what felt like a hangover (nope, didn't drink last night!). Have you had this problem? Have any side effects gone away with time?

Thank you soooo much for your input--I really appreciate it.

Sheena

Oh God- Neurontin isn't even labeled for pain control!! So many doctors give it out for reasons they shouldn't. I have fibro and my rheumatologist gave it to me. After about 30 minutes of taking it I felt like I was completely gone. I have never done any hallucenogenic drugs, but I swear I felt like I had drunk a whole bottle of Vodka, dropped some acid and smoked a whole joint. I was so dizzy I had a panic attack. I thought maybe I was having an allergic reaction and totally thought I was dying. Of course I had a houseful of people at the time and they thought I was totally nuts. Needless to say that was with one pill. I was prescribed 3 at a time, about 6 times a day. NOw for what?? I have fibro which is myofacial pain, not neuropathy. It is beginning to be given out to CP patients like antidepressants are.

But at least you are given a real pain medication along with it. But, if if works good for you then thats great. I just would never take it again, even if I was dying from seizures.

Sarah

Hi Sheena,

I have Spina Biffada Occulta at L7. This has caused the disks above and below L7 to crack and rupture. I'm not a surgical candidate at this stage, PCP flat out said I'm going to have to live with back pain. He wanted to try Neurontin as others have reported relief from chronic pain. He also felt that since it has a potentate effect on pain killers it is also a tool to deal with tolerance.

When I first started taking it the side effects I noticed most were lethargy and muscle weakness. Over time those seemed to lessen. I swim Masters and I will stop taking it 10 days before I do a meet and I do feel stronger those times. Could be mental, could be physical.

While I said before it's not a cure-all for my pain but it does help me sleep and that sure has an effect on how I feel even with pain.

I would give it a try, and not just for a few days, like I said I didn't notice any benefit until about 6 weeks into it.

Hope this helps,
Oceans

Thanks very much, Oceans. I joined a gym about four weeks ago for cardio and weight training as I guess I'm trying to take a holistic approach to this filthy pain. It takes everything I have to get to the gym after taking the Neurontin, but once I'm there, I seem to be okay. I was very interested to hear that it took six weeks for you to notice anything--that really helps clarify things. I'll stick it out. Thanks again.

S.
