I have recently started taking Wellbutrin SR to quit smoking. I know that SSRI's cause teeth grinding in people who already have this habit. (Like bruxism peeps or TMJ people.) I have been getting horrible headaches and jawaches because of this. I know it's a side effect that won't last forever, but I am soooo annoyed. And it hurts! Other than hydro or soma, does anyone know what kind of medication will mitigate this problem? Preferably non-narcotic, and not Trazadone. (Yuck) My doctor is pretty open to ideas, so I would be able to call ask for a prescription if anyone knows what works. HELP!

I've had TMJ for years, and the only thing that ever helped me was Xanax / alprazolam. They have a way of working on tense muscles in me personally - jaws, neck, shoulders...might not work for you, but it did for me. Perhaps some type of muscle relaxant might work - Soma works well for alot of people from what I've read hear, tho it never did a thing for me. Hope I'm not misunderstanding the question. If I am, I apologize!
I hope you find relief...and the rest of you, as well.

hi! i suffer from TMJ problems too. in the past, i have been on 3 different SSRI's for anxiety/depression. i am very sure they helped bring my symptoms to the worst point ever, i did not know any of this while i was on these meds. anyway, i switched to ativan for my anxiety & it helped relax my jaw quite a bit, though I did not like how the medication made me feel. muscle relaxants, as well as any benzos are helpful for relaxing your jaw & sometimes keep you from clenching & grinding. i have not tried anything other than flexiril as far as muscle relaxers go, but you may want to look into them. most doctors prescribe these meds before they will prescribe any painkillers for TMJ.

One other thing you might think about - especially if you're doing this in your sleep, is to get one of those mouth guards - you can get one from your dentist. That might help some. Sorry to hear of your dilemma, best of luck!

For me, nothing has been better for teeth grinding than a good brand of 2 Somas and 20 mg. Valium (preferably) or 1 mg. Xanax.
Good luck!

I never knew SSRIs did this (caused bruxism or aggravated it) what a revelation! And THANK YOU for the information!
