I let some spyware be installed on my computer!
      #105372 - 10/05/03 10:42 AM

I made a visit to codeine.50g.com website yesterday for some info that I posted here. When the website was loading, I had a window come up saying I needed some kind of plug-in for viewing and it said that the certificate was verified by NSI or whatever those things usually say. I admit, it was stupid of me to not check it out further, and I let it download. It appears that it put spyware on my computer.

From my firewall software I saw that there were 2 programs put onto my computer at that time. One was called 2nd look and the other was called loader. Also, under the guise of adware, it installed freescratchtickets. Those programs were trying to access the internet from my computer but were blocked by my firewall although the firewall did not alert me that anything was trying to access the internet. I have removed all the identified spyware.

I just wanted to let y'all know so you know to watch out for that. Have any of you had this happen? Anyone know anything about this plug-in ploy? Sonick, care to share some of that vast repository of knowledge with us?

Thanks for the heads-up, antique.

I'm having a tech friend of mine take a look at my hard drive this week, just in case there are some unwanted programs. Eternal vigilance is probably our only real protection against stuff like this.

How annoying. Try using Lavasoft Ad-Aware, wipes that stuff right off your PC. Thanks for the heads-up.

Most recommend using both Spybot & Ad-aware . . . they work quite well for the most basic spyware attacks, available all over the net. Hopefully OK to post CNET links below. They will help clean-up your mess. I would also take a look at control panels add/remove options, clear cookies . . . use the above and then run norton or whatever utility program you have to clean some regs and misc.

Thanks for the info everyone. I feel so violated! I can't stand prying people or companies! RealNetwork is RealAnnoying with its pesky little spyware that gets put back on your computer everytime you use RealPlayer. Any suggestions short of just not using RealPlayer?

I, too, have had that happen where there is a line or 2 of text saying "click here to view site" and a software download pops up to run. I've never wanted to see a website bad enough to download additional software to view it, though. This happened frequently yesterday while doing some research. Beware!

If you have SpyBot run it first,"Check for Problems", when it shows the Spyware, click on "Immunize". This cool tool prevents the Spyware from attaching itself again.I have blocked 472 so far. It's a bigger problem than most realize.

I did this for Real Player and it works. I can still use the Player, but No Spyware.

So,everytime you find Spyware,just "Immunize".Pretty Cool!
J.

EDIT TO ADD: Antique~Thanks for the compliment on "Agape Grandparent",I truly enjoy my Grandson!(he lives w/me)

Excellent tip, Jeremiah!
Thanks for the head's up, Antique. The problem with spyware seems to only be getting worse. I feel bad for newbies who may be getting their first machine, they must end up bombarded with this stuff.

Take Care,
Toky

I didn't know about that nifty program, but I have it now. Way cool!
