I have been mouthing off on both boards now about acupuncture and finally I went back. And I remember why it took me so long, but it is pain now against limitless tolerance later. I know my family really feels pain genetically and unless society changes overnight, the day will come when I will have acute pain and then....well, it's not as easy to kill yourself as they say.
So I went back, folks, and the verdict is;
It still hurts and it still works.
I knew I would have to but I am able to cut back my pain meds in significant amount and it is not so bad.
He gave me tea to clease my liver and now to help flush out the toxins. Next week he is sending me to a deep pressure massage therapist, who will help me figure out again my levels of exercise.
Now if only I can count on my head and heart to stay on track, I could do this again.
I am posting this because once again I have had my face rubbed in an unpleasant fact: Chronic pain is a battle and if I only have one weapon (meds) I will lose.
Without access to my meds when needed, I will lose also, so I am not preaching to quit here!
If anyone here has any fears about the safety or cleanliness of this method, please PM.
I am gladly a shill for this medicine. I think Western medicine is picking up on it and calling it "trigger-point injections" but the results are there for many people I know.
I still need the meds.
I have another more controversial point of view about medication, but that's another story.
I think some of us could do so much better if only we were on some kind of med monitoring program...yeah, some energy/pain med/attention retention med in a.m. and a calmant in the p.m.
I know that is supposed to be bad, bad, bad.
But at least those people get some work done. Is it better to flounder helplessly and be unable to plan, but be drug-free?
I am beginning to think that some forms of pain and depression require a cluster-bomb approach of meds, therapy and love.
What do you guys think?

prettyday, I like that...cluster bomb approach. I agree. In lots of ways western med tries to oversimplify how an ailment is treated. It attempts to make a division between the mental and the physical well-being of a person, and won't even touch on any kind of spiritual aspect.
I think I should try acupuncture sometime. I have to admit that it seems like everytime I have seen accupuncture on tv or other media, there is a needle sticking right between the persons eyes... and that kinda freaks me out. I'm not squeamish about needles or much of anything in general, but this one thing gets to me. Just one of my quirks. So did they put a needle between your eyes?

And I have a thing about the wrists too. Do they put needles on the undersides of your wrists?

I'm so happy for you this is working! I'm certainly willing to give it a try. My brother does it for his dog and it works great for little Fido. I've always been a believer in this type of stuff, and I'm willing to try anything in addition to/or in place of the meds. Thanks for sharing!
PS I'm interested in this tea also - what is it called??

Thank you!!! I am happy too. The teas are combinations of herbs that the doctor blends together; then I go and cook them once, strain the liquid out, then cook the herbs one more time and strain out that liquid as well and add it to the previous liquid. I drink it hot, on an empty stomach 2 to 3 times a day. It is loathsome!
I think he changes it around as he sees fit.
Antique- they will not put one needle someplace you don't want. I am just like you and I was squeamish about that; they put them along the top of the scalp too, and I really felt that (But that wasnt for back injury; it was for stress and headaches)
As for the wrists, no, a good acupuncture dr won't put anything somewhere that will really stress you out. He might try to get you to try it in time if you have pain there, but his attitude and compassion should not be affected because you have concerns about certain areas.
You know in my back-he uses 3 inch needles, then taps them in an inch and a half; then just kind of twists them til he find the spot where I cringe.
You can tell when it works. Your body temp goes up or at least you start to sweat a little; afterwards you are trememdously thirsty.
But any discomfort or pain is not an echo or a worsening of what you are already suffering. It is more like hitting the very 'spot' that keeps scarring over with tissue and irritating the area.
Basically, I think of myself as a big steak getting tenderized, between the needles and the tea.
But the important thing is that I am choosing to go; if it turns out that I always have pain there, well this will help lessen it, and it will give me more dignity when and if I do have to confront a Pain Management Clinic.
I know exercise would help too; I am in the worst shape of my life.
But one thing at a time.
I got lucky.
This was the second acupuncturist I tried. After the first, I was ready to kiss it off forever. I had back pain, and they put needles in my ankles, forehead, I forget where else, and used some electrodes on top of the needles and some burning herbs. It was really pleasant but for me it did not work.
Now for others, that approach with the electrodes works way better; my dr has that stuff; he just doesn't use it on me.
So, yeah, give it a go. All the local newspapers and circulars usually have a first time special from some clinics in them; if you don't like the first, wait a while, go to the second.
Here is another thought Antique and everyone else who is worried (I WAS!!!) Ask the dr to put just one needle in an area and show you how it works--
Here is directly opposing to Acupuncture philosophy and advice- if you are on anti-anxiety medication, it sure would be good timing to take a dose in time before the visit. This will help you relax and let the tissue relax and let go and the circulation won't be constricted...you got it. Don't pain med up too much (not saying anyone does ) because you want to be able to identify those flashes of discomfort when he pokes them or she, I should say!
Try it!

Prettyday, thanks for all the great info! I will give it a try. I'll put out some feelers for who to go to around here. Keep us posted on your treatment.
