Hydro Tolerance new
      #104389 - 10/01/03 01:34 PM

I have been taking hydros and Percocet for about a year, not steadily, only when needed for back pain. My pain comes in waves that last sometimes weeks at a time. Is there any way to lower my tolerance so that I won't need to take as many next time it hits? Thanks.

One way is to wean down a bit with a taper, if possible. I have never taken them, so I am not sure how a taper with Hydro works...maybe someone else on the board may know?

Good luck!!

I have been taking percocets everyday for a year.I found the best method for me is 1 in the morning, 1 in the afternoon and 1 in the evening. My tolerance has stayed the same.I try and take 2 a day every now and then just to keep me honest.Just got #120 this morning for month.

Ahhh, that's an ugly ugly cycle isn't it? "Drug Holiday" is an uglier one but it helps in lowering your tolerance. I'd recommend it from time to time. Give yourself a 3 day pill free experience (if possible) or use something non opiate (not hydro, not codeine, not oxy, etc) for the pain while your body clears its self of the hydrocodone. Ultram is helpful for such times.

Just to let you know that I took a 2 week break form hydro and then just started back on them this week after getting hit with a severe migraine and my tolerance has not really changed all that much! I was really disappointed! I thought that I would really have good pain relief after taking such a long break, but I was only slightly less tolerant. I am still not using as much as I had been, but it worries me that I will have to take an even longer break next time. I did use ultracet during the time I was not on the hydro and I wonder if that has anything to do with it. I was also in a great deal of pain! Hope things work out for you and the hydro tolerance doesn't get too high. You may find yourself having to switch to something stronger like oxycodone if your tolerance doesn't lower with a small holiday. Good luck.
