      #104412 - 10/01/03 02:47 PM

Hi!!
My doc gave me a script for these 10mg ones. I have taken 3 of them at once and noticed nothing. How many can I safely take? Any info will be helpful-Thanks!

Elavil is usually very sedating, especially when you first start taking it. The doctor gave you the smallest dose possible. I assume that this elavil Rx is to treat sleep problems, because they usually give much larger and even less pleasant doses for depression. 25mg would help me stay asleep, but caused a lot of intense bad dreams.

With psych meds, what's "safe" is difficult to answer. I don't know what other meds your taking, if your psychiatrist intends for this to have any antidepressant effect, etc. With that said, assuming everything else is normal, 100 mg wouldn't kill you, and some patients are started that high. I wouldn't be comfortable suggesting it's ok to take more, even though it probably is.

If you are on this for chronic insomnia, not for depression, then you don't want to be taking a high dose of it every day, especially if you take other psych meds.

The best answer to what is safe would come from your psychiatrist. Tell him 3 Elavil 10's do not put you to sleep at all, what other options are there. Trazodone and seroquel are two other meds psychs like to give out for insomnia because while they can cause dependence, there is no abuse potential. Maybe you could get switched to trazodone with a small script for Ambien on bad nights?

Becareful, this medication has a LONG half life, and thus a cumulative effect...it also potentiates other drugs ...particularly benzo's and narcotics....I was taking elavil 150mg/day (prescribed for pain management) the max dose, and had my first surgery....and ended up comatose for 2 days, because the large dose of elavil potentiated the IV narcotics, & anesthetics used in surgery....so build up slowly & don't play with the dose without medical supervision...it also has the potential for cardiac toxicity...i.e. can KILL your heart muscle....so if you take it at high doses, you need specific tests to be run intermittently to monitor function....
