Ketamine
      #98975 - 09/09/03 11:11 AM

Hi folks,
I have read a lot on Ketamine on this board and thought I would add my 2 cents. 1 1/2 years ago my then 3 year old daughter was bit on the face by an 80 lb. Akita. Her face was pretty torn up so surgery was needed immediatly. They fixed her face right there in the ER and the anasthesia (sp?) they gave her was Ketamine. Her eyes were open but nobody was home. The thing that suprised me the most was how quickly she came out of it when the doc was done with her. I hope this can help solve any questions on how this drug can and is used.
Regards,
Pickledoo

By the way, if anyone is interested, the ER doc was a magician. There is very little scarring on my stunning, beautiful, breathtaking, illuminating, bright, sweet, loving Daughter. (was that a bit too much?)

Hey Pickle:

Yep, one of the few times Ketamine is used in "Human" medicine is for pediatric trauma. I'm very familiar with the drug because I worked for years as a veterinary technician and then decided I really needed to put food on the table so I left the field.

A common usage for Ketamine is for a spinal tap or other uncomfortable or possible "traumatic" procedure in infants.

As you know, Ketamine acts as a dissociative. My little grandson was given Ketamine for a spinal tap "so he wouldn't remember it" according to the ER doc...He was 18 months...

In the literature, ketamine has been used for intractable pain, sometimes in addition to opiates. In rare cases, it is used for this (do a google). I think maybe not as much in the US.

I'm pretty sure that when I had I my wisdom teeth removed that was one of the many drugs that they were pumping into me through the IV. I could be wrong, but man I felt good after I came to! Sure my mouth hurt, but who cared. Of course I attribute all the fun to the opiates they had loaded me up on.

Yeah, when I had my wisdom teeth removed I was given an IV of Ketmine and Midazolam at the same time. They initially just gave me a pin prick to make sure I wasn't allergic and I laughed. Next thing I knew, my girlfriend was driving me home.

Take care and be safe.

I'd like to try some other anesthesia's besides ketamine without the midazolam. Not necessarily during surgery though.

Ketamine is widely used as an anesthetic for sedation in pediatrics....it's a great dissociative(ie, lights on, nobody home), no respiratory depression and short half life...we used it almost exclusively in the PICU....for this reason...
