Hydrocodone makes me itchy
      #103173 - 09/26/03 11:14 PM

Ooops. I posted this under Canadian pharmacy comments. Sorry my first time! Anyway, I would really appreciate some feedback on why this drug makes me itch all over. Aside from this mild side affect, I swear by this drug for my back aches. Thanks.

Opiates cause the body to release histamine. This is the same chemical that attaches to the surface of human cells to cause allergies, hence the itching. It's a very well documenting side effect of opiates and has been for centuries, so it's nothing to be concerned about. There is a lot more to it than that, but I hope that answered your question adequately.

It's also normal to build up a tolerance to this side effect with repeated dosing, but my nose will sometimes itch a little if I take a high dose. If it bothers you, you might want to try an antihistamine. A sedating anithistamine like Benadryl will potentiate your opiates, but it might make you fall asleep. I'd suggest Tavist, as it's effective with much less sedation, and lasts for a while. Just be careful about excessively scratching yourself because it doesn't hurt while you're on the hydrocodone, but it could hurt later if you do it enough.

Codeine tends to be the itchiest opiate for most people, especially in high doses, so you might want to be careful to take an antihistamine with that if you ever start taking it.

I've never built a tolerance to the itching There was a thread on this not too long ago- my nose always itches when I take hydro. Sometimes, other parts of me start to itch, too- but the nose- it's horrible! I try not to itch it but when I get started- sometimes, I have an 'owie' on my nose from the scratching

Whenever I itch from the hydro, I take an Aveeno bath (if its all over itching),other times I rub Benadryl Creme on the itchy part and it stops. The creme is clear so I don't have pink spots like the Benadryl Lotion. LOL!

I get the pruritus (itching) from almost all of the true opiates (and some that are synthetic)...I used Benadryl or Phenergan or Compazine to deal with the itching, if necessary.
