Ultram, what a surprise
      #101133 - 09/18/03 10:24 PM

Having been on Demerol and hydros 7.5/500 for weeks and having taken hydros for years, I knew I had a tolerance problem; so, when my PCP gave me Ultram (so as to not impose on my pain doc, I feared for the worst tonight. But, I am feeling pretty good. I feel a bit of pain but Ultram has done a pretty good job so far. My questionis this: why is it keeping up with hydros as well as it is. Ultran's structure is a bit like the TCAs (Nortripteline [sp?] but I can't see why such a structure kills pain as well as it does. The TCAs don't do anything for pain: they are antidepressants. Perhaps I have so much hydro in me that I am getting some synergism and in time the hydro contribution will disappear, but so far I am surprised at Ultram's performance. Any theories on this joyful surprise? Oh yea, I am taking about 4 tabs every 4 hours and that is beyond the suggested dosage. The only negative is my inability to sleep right now. But, I can live with that: it sure beats another trip to the ER!

Hey Doc:

Read the Pharmacodynamics section...Give it a second to load.

http://www.ortho-mcneil.com/products/pi/pdfs/ultram.pdf

Like so many drugs (excepting the naturally occurring opiods) the mechanism of action is not fully understood .

Thanks Beetlenut:I did not know that Ultram had a high affinity for the mu-opioid receptor and was 200 times stronger because of this. What was useful I guess to this list was this: product literature stated that three good sized trials demonstrated that Ultram was comparable to the combination of Tylenol and codene (#3).

MANY will disagree, but Ultram is a shrouded opiate. Change this, finagle that...and now you have an 8 hour non-narcotic.

I loved them. I agree with efficacy. 200mg will definately get the job done.

Since you were on stronger medication, I am sure you are aware of their addictive properties. Ultram is a suprise there too. Once you are on, they are as hard if not harder to kick than hydro.

But yeah...good mood, great energy, kills pain...and unscheduled. IMO, McNeil will be sued for this drug BIG time.

Let's hope not, especially if it gets the job done!

Ultram has always worked good for me, and I find it also has some type of anti-depressant quality to it. Be careful though, people have reported when taking more than the recommended dosage can result in seizures - be careful!!!

I take antidepressants as well as having taken Ultram and I found that when I stopped the Ultram, my depression was exacerbated. I had to go back and wean in addition to taking my antidepressants to keep from sobbing uncontrollably every day. I have also found it is harder on your body than the Lortab is when you have taken it for a while and then stop. Just keep this in mind and be careful!

Do you have to take it for a while before it helps? It didn't help me, but I didn't take it for very long.

Instead of taking the 1 50mg dose every 3-6 hours, I have found taking 200mg (4 tabs) every 8-10 hours works MUCH better. Just in my own experience. "I am not a doctor, and don't play one on TV" . Also take it on an empty stomach and you should get relief within 2 hours. -AFI

I just got my order today from clickdrugstore and it is tramalcaps which I have never taken before. Anyone here who has taken them before?

In other posts and IMHO, caps work alot faster then pills. But other then that, I have never used clickdrugstore tramalcaps. My only advice, start small and work your way up . -AFI

I'm not at all sure if caps "work a lot faster than pills," as AFI stated, but they do work. Like so many others here, I love Ultram (Tramadol), and feel pretty lucky to have found a doctor who doesn't have a problem with prescribing it for me on regular basis (I think he may use it himself, my great shrink). But it's true, too, that you WILL have some withdrawals, and they can be pretty bad. I go into them every two months, while making Ultram-vacation for a week or two. These vacations help me enjoy the magic of Ultram in its fullness, but the first three, four days are unpleasant, to put it gently. Oh, well... Good luck to you!

What do you find the best way to start an Ultram Vacation? Cold-turkey or to taper? Both ways really suck!

Cold-turkey is the way, I think. Although I said that it is rather unpleasant, it's not the end of the world! I experience some sweating, shivering, restless leg syndrome, but I can live with that for those three, four days. I guess I don't want to waste my pills on tapering Let me know how you are doing,
Jerzy

I totally agree with the previous post.I've been taking ultram for about 3 years now and have found it better for my arthritis/back than some narcotic pain relievers.I can't believe the gov't haven't tried to get this scheduled yet.I sure hope they don't either.I began taking them after learning of it's properties and how closely it is related to u-opiods,but not an opiod. Then I learned it is broken down which in turn-turns into something of a morphine type. I've only had favorable results with ultram and would recommend this to anyone looking to not taking narcotics-it's the next best thing.IMHO. As to the 1st poster;be very careful not to exceed 400mg per/day.I'm quite sure you're already aware of it's side effects like;seizures. So be cautious in using above recommended dosage. www.Clickdrugstore.com has the cheapest ultram out there-their tramal caps are good and they work very fast.At least they do for me.Maybe,it's the cap/filler;but anyway it works. The most time it's taken to receive a pck.from them was about 8 days from ordering and they use very good packaging;nothing shakes, rattle or rolls.Very quiet and securely packaged.Small too. I'd say they are #1.

Good night and stay out of pain.

lala
