Why is my tramadol getting seized all of a sudden?
      #102129 - 09/23/03 06:12 AM

Hello everyone,

I am in need of feedback, please. I have ordered tramadol overseas for a long time now and never had any problems until my last two orders. Both seized by customs! I was under the impression that ultram(tramadol) not being a controlled substance is legal to import under a 3 month supply. Is it possible my name is now on a "watch list" and I won't be able to receive it again?

This is a huge problem since I am very dependent on it for pain (crohn's disease) and it is way too expensive to buy in the states. I would appreciate any help.

I too have had shipments seized! That is why I pretty much stopped using overseas sources. The problem is 2 fold. Once one of the Feds gets your name stuck in their head they look for packages to you. For a long time I got meds from Access-Meds. Then one day the order was late. About a week later I got a seizure notice! As I recall Access is in South Africa. So the stuff was coming thru Miami. So I tried an order from Pharmagroup and got it! Pharmagroup is in France and so MOST of their packages come thru NY (different inspectors). I tried to order from Access a few more times but same story, SEIZED! It is a bummer loosing it all that way. Now I'm back to Mexico, but dont know for how long. Probably until one gets seized. In my opinion it is best to vary your orders from one to another. That way you dont become a familiar name to anyone. The second problem is that while everyone SAYS that it's legal to bring stuff in overseas (and I'm not disputing that) in order to enforce your rights you would have to go to that state and place it is seized in to contest it. And who wants to go to court to ask for their drugs back?

You don't have the right to import 3 months supply of something available in the US.

I have been doing a lot of research about this and reviewed US Customs laws several of times. It seems pretty clear that you can import up to a 3 month supply as long as it is not a controlled substance and (this is why I think mine but it must be a name brand FDA approved and that includes generics. My generic brand was not approved by the FDA.

Anyways, it was coing from Healthcare...... in Tailand. I had used them since it only took 3-4 days via EMS to receive and never had any problems. I am now going to seek a place in a different Geographic area. This really sucks.

I was under the impression that you could import (even controlled) as long as you yourself was bringing it across the border. I think having it sent via the mail is a whole different thing. The customs people probably just see pills and take it not bothering to check to see what it is. Just my 2 cents

That is only partly correct. There is no blanklet FDA policy or rule that allows anyone to "import up to a 3 month supply as long as it is not a controlled substance," unless it's hand carried my a traveler visiting or entering the U.S. with a prescription. The 1988 FDA Pilot Guidance does not apply to drugs sold in the U.S. such as tramadol.

FDA can seize mail imports of tramadol under the authority of the FD&C Act at their discretion. If you want to bring tramadol from overseas without problem, you must handcarry it into the country and have a prescription on you.

FDA can seize anything that is not manufactured in an FDA-inspected/approved manufacturing facility (e.g. Viagra is made in Ireland by Pfizer) and imported with an import license. That is for large commercial sources and recipients only. A pharmacy cannot legally import their own drug supply by ordering wholesale from overseas. Not even from Canada. That's what all the fuss is about in Illinois right now. The Governor wants people to be able to get drugs from Canada. The AARP is the most effective lobbying organization and retired people vote. Allowing mail importation of personal-use quantities of prescription drugs from overseas is nowa part of the MedicAid debate surrounding health care costs for seniors. But under the Equal Protection clause, any relaxation of the rules would apply to everyone regrdless of age.

P.S. All indications are that Customs is now doing extensive pill patrol again. They are focusing on Thailand it seems.

Very informative post! Thank you. The odd thing about my seizure is customs has opened up my tramadol in the past and than let it through after taping it back up with green tape.

Anyways, the American prices for tramadol are rediculous! I am in need desperately, though. I will try a different OP but I could use a bit of advice on where to purchase from a place that is quick and dependable

Thanks everyone

Trampy, how long does this pill patrol deal usually last? Does customs do it often? I was thinking about placing another order with clickdrugstore for tramadol while the prices are low and it is still sorta legal. There are other places almost as cheap but they charge 15 to 25 in shipping. Not a lot of money I know, except that I am on a very limited income.
